As students in Scotland prepare to receive their exam results, UCAS is on hand with help and advice about the Confirmation and Clearing process.
Posted Tue 31 July 2018 - 23:00

The new UCAS Clearing hub is the official place to find all the courses with places available.

The latest application figures – published following the 30 June deadline – show that 32.8 per cent of all 18 year olds in Scotland have applied through UCAS this year. In total, 48,710 people from Scotland have applied to start an undergraduate course this September, a similar number to last year.

Applicants can sign in to Track from 09:00 on SQA results day (Tuesday 7 August) to see if they have been accepted, or are eligible for Clearing.

An official Clearing choice can be added from 10:00, although applicants should call universities and colleges beforehand to discuss courses they’re interested in, and ensure places are available.

Last year, 1,810 people from Scotland were accepted through Clearing, with 420 of those applying after 30 June and submitting their application directly into Clearing.

Helen Thorne, UCAS’ Director of External Relations, said: ‘When you sign in to Track on results day, you’ll see your confirmed place at university or college, if you’ve achieved the results needed. If you haven’t been accepted, there are several options open to you, including looking at alternatives in Clearing.

‘When looking at alternative courses, make sure you research them carefully, and contact universities you have a genuine interest in studying at. If you now decide to go in a different direction, the UCAS website has all the information you need about embarking on an apprenticeship in Scotland.’

UCAS advisers are ready to help on social media, through Twitter and Facebook. If you’d like to talk about your application, experts are also available from 08:00 on SQA results day – the number to call is 0371 468 0 468.

If your results aren’t what you expected (whether higher or lower), the Skills Development Scotland Exam Results Helpline offers free, independent careers advice. Professional advisers will be ready to take calls from 08:00 on SQA results day, to offer independent guidance about all your options. You can call the Exam Results Helpline on 0808 100 8000.
