Strategies for success: practical solutions for your students’ transition to HE in the time of C-19

Tuesday 8 June 2021 14:25 - 15:15
Open to all

Summary

This interactive workshop will offer practical advice to international teachers and advisers on supporting effective transition to HE, combining insights from international student, teacher and recruitment and university student support staff perspectives. The approach to the session directly builds on feedback received from teachers in previous events on this theme.

The speaker team will start by guiding delegates through a framework for designing transition support, the ‘Five Senses of Student Success’ (Lizzio & Wilson), giving tangible examples from their own practice on both sides of the desk, including the student perspective on transition in the time of C-19. They will highlight challenges and solutions in this area in the current Covid context.

To facilitate networking and the discussion of good practice, the main part of the session will involve teachers and advisers working on a collaborative online task to help design their own transition support, using one or more of these transition areas or ‘Senses’ as a focus.

This structured activity (with worked examples) will use Padlet to allow delegates to live collate ideas and share good practice, also giving a tangible output and record of discussions.

The workshop will finish with delegates reporting back on the activity and a discussion and Q and A, along with a resources list. Delegates will leave with practical solutions and ideas for transition support to take back to their own cultural and educational contexts.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify tangible opportunities to support transition in their own practice as teachers and advisers, using the research-informed ‘Five Senses of Student Success’ (Lizzio & Wilson) to structure their ideas.
  • Outline examples of approaches to transition from an international school context and from the viewpoint of current international students, including those who have transitioned into higher education in the time of C-19.
