Architecture – portfolios and pavilions

Friday 5 June 2020 12:30
Open to all

Summary

A portfolio is not only about the work inside it, but about the way the work is presented and communicated as an overall narrative to best tell your story as a creative individual.

The portfolio is a significant part of the admissions process – while grades signify academic achievements, the portfolio displays creative ability. Dr Rachel Cruise, Undergraduate Admissions Tutor for BArch Architecture, will provide guidance on the key elements of preparing a high-quality portfolio.

Following this, delegates will undertake a design challenge to produce a concept and design proposal for a campus pavilion. Through an interactive activity, participants will develop an understanding of the architectural design process, from conceptualising ideas, through to creating working models and ‘pitching’ their chosen solutions.

The activity will be based on Loughborough University’s award-winning Subject In a Box series: www.lboro.ac.uk/study/he-unboxed/subject/engineering/architecture.

Learning outcomes

  • An understanding of the essential criteria for an applicant’s portfolio (format, size, materials, content).
  • An understanding of how applicants can articulate their ability to be creative and critically reflective through presenting their design processes.
  • An understanding (and practical experience of) what it means to have and develop a proposal to fulfil a design ‘concept’.
