They have recently launched FutureLearn Choices – a collection of courses designed specifically to help AS and A level students make higher education decisions.

The courses are provided by many top UK universities, and run for three to eight weeks in June and July, after exams are over and before the summer holidays begin. They can be taken anywhere, at anytime, on mobile, tablet or PC.

What courses are on offer?

The courses are designed to give students a taste of STEM or vocational subjects, such as dentistrymedicinearchaeology, computer scienceforensics, or robotics.

Others equip students with the necessary skills to prepare for independent study at university, with courses like critical thinkingdeveloping a research projectnumeracy skillscalculus, or mechanics.

There are even courses to prepare students for their UCAS application, such as preparing for unihow to succeed at writing applications and how to succeed at interviews.

Strengthening UCAS applications

Many of FutureLearn’s university partners say that completing a FutureLearn course is evidence that applicants are interested in the subject and can learn successfully on their own – making these courses a great addition to UCAS applications and personal statements.

How can I get my students to sign up?

Spread the word

Hold an assembly for sixth formers to explain the programme and how it can help them, or discuss it with your class as part of the curriculum. FutureLearn has plenty of information and ready-made PowerPoint decks for you to use. Email [email protected] if you would like to receive one.

Email the link to courses

Students can sign up at www.futurelearn.com/collections/choices. Simply send out the link and the courses on offer in an email to your A level students, and encourage them to sign up!

Group learning

All FutureLearn courses have social learning built in, allowing learners to find each other and discuss the steps they have completed. Some teachers have even held group sessions, with students signing up to courses and progressing together.
