Student life

The ARU community is inclusive, safe, supportive and sustainable:

  • We're really proud to have been ranked 1st in the UK and 20th in the world for health and wellbeing in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, published on 27 April.
  • Our students speak highly of us, ranking us in the top 14% for 'My course has challenged me to achieve my best work' in the National Student Survey 2022.
  • We've pledged to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of our University's conduct from our formal curriculum to our student life and activities. We even have a Sustainability Strategy that has goals set out for us to achieve by 2026 to help our students become responsible global citizens.
  • We have free counselling available to all students and we've introduced a SafeZone app so you can get assistance 24/7 on-campus or in University accommodation.
  • All first year students are automatically paired with a Welcome Buddy to help you ease into university life.

What's it like to live in East of England?
Check out our region guide

The East of England is made up of five counties and cities like Luton, Norwich, and Cambridge. Made famous by its namesake university, picturesque Cambridge attracts droves of visitors, with graduates including Stephen Hawking and Emma Thompson.

Branch out and you’ll find Europe’s equivalent to Silicon Valley – Silicon Fen – a burgeoning hub for big tech players and software start-ups.

This corner of England has a star-studded history, too. Iconic movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Shining were shot at Elstree Studios in Essex. Meanwhile, the University of East Anglia served as Avengers HQ in multiple Marvel movies.

Campus and facilities

Our campuses are at the heart of four exciting cities: Cambridge, Chelmsford, Peterborough and London. With a thriving Students' Union, 120 student societies and city life right on your doorstep, there's never a dull moment.

Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough are all within 1 hour of London via train, making them well connected locations for students looking to commute or discover new opportunities during or after their studies. For our healthcare courses we work closely with the NHS and our partners to get you work experience, meanwhile many of our degrees such as Sport, Computing, Computer Games or Theatre/Acting courses work closely with local connections to help you network and build opportunity while you study.

The cities all have a variety of shops, clubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, museums and leisure activities to help you balance work with play, while gyms and sports facilities are available either on-campus or through ARU sports clubs and societies.
