Student life

Our academic community thrives on open and inclusive partnerships, with collaboration at its heart. Our students work together with our academic teams, businesses and our partners to find answers and identify solutions that make a difference.

We want you to get the best out of your university experience, and because we know that everyone learns in different ways, a lot of our courses are pioneering Block and Blend, and Double Block module structures. Instead of multiple modules followed by an exam, we teach one or two modules at a time followed by assessment.

The University of Suffolk is compact—with us, you’re a name, not a number. You will get to know your course team, library, and support staff, a community of people on-site to ease your academic journey. And then there is the Students’ Union (SU) and all the activities run by your societies, that help you to get introduced to the 3000 students studying alongside you.

What's it like to live in East of England?
Check out our region guide

The East of England is made up of five counties and cities like Luton, Norwich, and Cambridge. Made famous by its namesake university, picturesque Cambridge attracts droves of visitors, with graduates including Stephen Hawking and Emma Thompson.

Branch out and you’ll find Europe’s equivalent to Silicon Valley – Silicon Fen – a burgeoning hub for big tech players and software start-ups.

This corner of England has a star-studded history, too. Iconic movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Shining were shot at Elstree Studios in Essex. Meanwhile, the University of East Anglia served as Avengers HQ in multiple Marvel movies.

Campus and facilities

At the University of Suffolk, whatever you choose to study, you will learn in state-of-the-art surroundings. The DigiTech Centre, which opened in 2021, is a hub for digital research and training with high tech laboratories. This was followed by the opening of our new Health and Wellbeing Building in 2022.

Athena Hall, our main student residence is on the beautiful waterfront and next door to one of our academic buildings.

We are committed to sustainability which is reflected at our Campus where 97% of our waste is recycled and 90% of our electricity comes from renewable sources. This has resulted in the university being awarded Green Business of the Year in the Suffolk County Council Creating The Greenest County Awards 2023.

Ipswich has great cafes, shops, bars and activities, fantastic beaches and outstanding countryside, easily accessible using public transport.  Affordable living, with London and Cambridge just an hour away—we give you the best of both worlds.
