Student life

As a student at York St John University, you will be a name, not a number. We celebrate individuality and diversity and want you to succeed in all areas. University is a time to make new friends, experience new things and discover yourself.

It's not just the course content that will challenge your assumptions and broaden your horizons: the friends you make as you study will enrich your life and help you to grow. We pride ourselves in being a space for a complete learning experience. This includes the people you meet and the activities you do together.

York is a great place to study. With over 2000 years of history, it is steeped in heritage and creativity that proves inspiring to so many. The magnificent York Minster is handily located in the centre, so you can use it as a direction point if you're ever lost. Campus and facilities

Since 1841, we have been welcoming people onto our city-centre campus, which is a key part of the wider York community, and the campus is reflective of the city itself. There's a mix of people from many walks of life, surrounded by buildings from the 1800s to now.

On our campus, you will find:

  • Specialist spaces with the latest equipment for your course, such as gyms, psychology laboratories and recording studios.
  • A 24-hour library, full of learning resources, such as textbooks, essays, archived documentation and a student kitchen.
  • A Students’ Union with a bar, café and gender-neutral toilets.
  • A doctor's surgery that offers private and confidential medical appointments and advice.
  • A sports campus 1 mile away that can be used by sports clubs and courses.

Innovation in building space

The Creative Centre is the permanent home for our performance and computer science courses. The space has a 170-seat theatre and dedicated rooms for creative writing and media production students.
