With significant contributions from experienced social workers and service users, this course combines university and practice-based learning and is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. It is delivered through the Centre for Social Work, which works to promote social and personal change and problem-solving in human relationships and communities. You will be taught by staff who have national and international reputations for the quality of their research and publications, and this knowledge informs their teaching.
The majority of academic teaching takes place in the autumn semester of each year. You will complete a total of 180 credits of modules. In year one, this typically includes human development, law, research methods, service user perspectives, and theories, modules and methods. Second-year studies cover safeguarding and critical perspectives, and include a dissertation. You can choose to specialise in social work for adults or children and families. Whichever option you choose, you will be qualified to work in any area of social work, anywhere in the UK. You will also undertake 170 days on placement in a social work setting.
The following entry points are available for this course:
2.1 (or international equivalent) in any discipline, plus GCSE English and Mathematics, C (4) or above. In exceptional cases, applications holding a 2:2 may be considered where there is evidence of extensive relevant work experience; GCSE equivalent tests, such as Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy qualifications cannot be accepted in lieu of GCSEs.
