Are you interested in life and the human condition?
With practical experience from early term one, you will gain the skills necessary to exploring this exciting topic. You will be trained by tutors who are active in the fields of biochemistry and biology, ensuring that you leave university with the skills needed to be successful in your future career. Our biochemists are experts in a wide variety of specialities, including human disease and cancer.
Through optional modules and research projects, you can tailor the course to focus on the specific areas of biochemistry that interest you.
This four-year MSci course provides you with:
Various specialisms including an emphasis on human diseases
A diverse range of optional modules, allowing you to explore your interests or specialise
Laboratory experience from term one
Training by tutors who are active in real world research, giving you the skills necessary for your future careers
Travel while you earn, through studying abroad at our campus in Malaysia or with our other partners
Your first three years of the course will be the same as our Biochemistry BSc course. During your first year, you'll be introduced to the fundamental aspects of cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and cellular control, as well as core skills in biochemistry. You'll also study essential chemistry modules, exploring topics including molecular structure, bonding and reactivity of organic molecules.
In the second year, your studies continue to go into greater depth. You'll cover structures, functions and analysis of proteins and genes, as well as the mechanisms and purpose of cell-to-cell signalling and metabolic regulation.
You'll undertake a research project in year three, exploring an area of biochemistry that suits your personal interests in the field. This project may be lab, bioinformatics, or literature-based. There's also a large selection of optional modules to expand your learning.
In your fourth year, you’ll complete a year-long research project. This could be lab or literature-based.
There are a range of optional modules to choose from in every year of the course. You will study these alongside core modules.
You'll be assessed through a variety of methods, including: essays, coursework, exams, lab report, presentations and a dissertation.
