Course summary

Civil engineering combines your creativity with technological and scientific knowledge that can change the world. You will learn how to design and manage high-profile projects. Working together in teams you'll learn about:

  • structures

  • geotechnics

  • materials

  • hydraulics and fluid mechanics

  • highway and transport engineering

  • surveying

  • construction management

Also as part of your course you will take part in site visits to see civil engineering in action. You will access research and laboratory facilities, including:

  • preparation and testing facilities for structures, geotechnics and materials

  • fluid mechanics teaching laboratory

  • state-of-the-art surveying equipment

  • design studios

  • CAD/BIM

The Civil Engineering MEng programme is the preferred route to achieving Chartered Engineer status. Our courses give you the required engineering expertise for either a career in industry or in many other professions that value an analytical, creative mind.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

in an Engineering or Science subject. Plus A Level Mathematics grade A is required. If applicants are missing A Level Mathematics then the Foundation Year (H100) is recommended.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 36 credits M: 9 credits P: 0 credits

including Distinction in 15 Mathematics credits and 15 Engineering/Science credits

Scottish Higher - AAABB

This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Advanced Higher grades AA including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design & Technology, Geography, Geology, Computing, Further Mathematics, Psychology, 3D Design, Design Engineering, Economics or Psychology.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*D

in an Engineering or Science subject, plus A Level Mathematics at grade A.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

Plus A Level Mathematics at grade A and grade A in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design & Technology, Geography, Geology, Computing, Further Mathematics, Psychology, 3D Design, Design Engineering. Economics or Psychology. Applications are assessed on an individual basis.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AA

including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design & Technology, Geography, Geology, Computing, Further Mathematics, Psychology, 3D Design, Design Engineering, Economics or Psychology. This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Higher grades AAABB.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - A

This qualification is acceptable when combined with A Level grades AA in Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design & Technology, Geography, Geology, Computing, Further Mathematics, Psychology, 3D Design, Design Engineering, Economics or Psychology.

Extended Project - A

If you have already achieved your EPQ at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your EPQ you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your EPQ. If you qualify for a contextual offer, your EPQ will be taken into consideration and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer. Please note that if you qualify for an enhanced contextual offer, your EPQ will not be taken into consideration as we are unable to make any further adjustments to your offer.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, M1, M1

English grade 4 / C

AQA Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) - A

If you have already achieved your Core Maths qualification at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your Core Maths qualification you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your Core Maths qualification. If you qualify for a contextual offer, your Core Maths qualification will be taken into consideration and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer.
