Course summary

This prestigious MEng degree covers both the hardware and software engineering aspects of the discipline. During the course you will gain extensive practical experience and we provide good access to interactive computer services.

With the continuing increasing pace of technological development, and the need for increased computing performance in applications such as high-performance computing, mobile computing and embedded systems, develop the skills and expertise needed to become a specialist in computer system design. In the final year, you can specialise in subjects such as IoT, Machine Learning and Signal Processing so you’re never tied to a single career path!

This courses sit at the cutting-edge boundary between computers and electronics. Many graduates from these courses go on to very highly paid and rewarding employment designing and building the next generation of smart appliances, Internet of Things devices and embedded systems. The Beng degree is 3 years where as the MEng involves study for an extra year and provides a more in-depth study of the subject.

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineers.

The MEng involves study for an extra year and provides a more in-depth study of the subject.

‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. UCAS Tariff - 128 - 144 points

A level

To include a minimum grade C in Maths and minimum grade C in Physics or Electronics. General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted. (Please note: other subject areas may be considered on a case by case basis.)

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM - DDD

In Electrical/Electronic Engineering. (Other subject areas may be considered on a case by case basis.)

Access to HE Diploma

Considered on a case by case basis.

Scottish Higher

Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Pass required, including H5 in Maths and H5 in Physics. (Other subject areas may be considered on a case by case basis.)

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.

Extended Project

Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level

Relevant T Level qualifications are considered on a case by case basis.

We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. We also welcome applications from mature learners and/or those with other qualifications are considered on individual merit. If you don't think you'll meet the entry requirements specified, you may be able to gain entry to this course via a Foundation Year route. Please see: Computer Science with Foundation Year (G40F). Additional fee information

On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
