Culture and Thought after 1945 (Taught)

Study level:
Postgraduate

Course summary

The course offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary, taught postgraduate study of the intertwined theoretical, cultural and historical developments of the contemporary. Drawing on the rich and varied offerings of 6 departments and centres at York, the course allows students to construct a programme that suits their particular interests, while the core module provides a foundation in various disciplinary and trans-disciplinary ways of conceptualising and analysing the contemporary. Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to approach the contemporary by bringing together the subject matter and methodologies of multiple disciplines in original and exciting ways. All students follow the team-taught core module and 3 optional modules offered by partner departments (Archaeology, English, the Centre for Women’s Studies, History, History of Art and Sociology).

Modules

Core Module: Framing the contemporary. Optional modules are available. The option modules offered vary from year to year, depending upon the interests and availability of staff.

Assessment method

Coursework consists of four assessed essays of approximately 4,500 words each. The Summer Term and the rest of the academic year are devoted to the production of a c.15,000-20,000-word dissertation, which is submitted at the end of September.
