Course summary
Applied Mathematics at Aberdeen gives you all the benefits of a top-quality mathematical education in a thriving centre of mathematical teaching and research, with focus on how we apply mathematics to better understand our world today. You will have a great choice of courses, individual attention in small classes, and a challenging syllabus which emphasises reasoning, rigour and application.
Pure maths is about solving problems and developing theories within mathematics but applied maths is more about using mathematical theory to solve problems in other areas, including science, engineering, physics. A lot of the theory that gets developed by pure mathematicians later becomes useful for applied mathematicians (and engineers, physicists etc.). You will learn from teachers and researchers internationally recognised as leaders in pure mathematics, especially algebra, analysis, geometry and topology and on their application to complex systems, particularly in biology.
Mathematics and computational science are used in almost every field of science, engineering, industry, and technology and a degree in Applied Mathematics is the gateway to a wide variety of challenging careers. However, it’s not just about crunching numbers – it is about solving problems and looking for opportunities. Employers are keen to recruit mathematicians because they can think logically and analyse new developments in business, commerce or technology, opening up opportunities especially in the financial sector, computing and information technology, geophysics and data analysis.

This Applied Mathematics BSc programme covers the core courses as studied in the pure Mathematics BSc degree. Additional core courses offered specifically in the Applied Maths degree include, Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Calculus. There are also a range of optional courses that can be chosen from both maths and physics areas.

Assessment method
Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; and written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses.
Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

A level - BBB
A minimum of 3 A Levels at BBB - to include Mathematics and one other Science subject.
To be considered for entry into Second Year, a minimum of 3 A Levels at ABB, with AB from 2 science or maths subjects (including the subject(s) nominated for Honours - an A in the subject for Single Honours or AB in the subjects for Joint Honours).
Also required: GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry, or Physics or Dual Award Science.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM
A minimum of DDM with the main subjects being Mathematics and Science.
Also required: GCSE at C or above in English or English Language, Mathematics and in either Chemistry, or Physics or Dual Award Science.
Scottish Higher - AABB
A minimum of 4 H at AABB (C at AH may substitute for B at H) obtained at a single sitting or a minimum of 5H at AAABB obtained over 2 sittings.
Must achieve at least BB in Mathematics and one other Science subject.
Standard Grades 1, 2 or 3 or Int 2, or National 5 at grades A, B or C in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.
Scottish Advanced Higher - ABB
For Second Year entry a minimum of 3 AH at ABB, a minimum of two must be Mathematics and Science subjects (including the subject(s) nominated for Honours).
Standard Grades 1, 2 or 3 or Int 2, or National 5 at grades A, B or C in English, Mathematics and in either Chemistry or Physics.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points
A minimum of 32 points, with a minimum of 5 points at HL required from Mathematics and at least one other Science subject.
For Second Year entry: a minimum of 34 points with a minimum of 6 at HL in the subject(s) nominated for Honours.
A minimum of Standard Level English and Maths also required.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H2, H2, H3, H3
5 subjects at Higher, with 3 at H2 and 2 at H3.
2 Science or Mathematics subjects required at minimum H3.

A level - CCC
Including good performance in Mathematics and one other Science subject by the end of your senior phase of education.
We are keen to encourage students from the widest possible range of backgrounds to participate in University studies, and we appreciate that not all students have the same opportunity to meet our advertised entry requirements.
For this reason we take contextualised information into account when making decisions on the applications we have received. Applicants who meet one or more of our widening access criteria (please check our webpages) may be made a conditional offer of admission at the “Adjusted” entry requirement level. Good performance in additional A Levels will be required.
Scottish Higher - BB
Applicants who have achieved BB, and who meet one of the widening access criteria are guaranteed a conditional offer. Good performance in additional Highers/Advanced Highers will be required.
