Problem solver? Technology lover? Fascinated by the world of medicine? Study biomedical engineering to help healthcare evolve, answer big questions about the human body and its functions and make a difference to people around the world.
Digital health, data science, biomaterials, clinical engineering, biomedical devices, tissue engineering… these are just a few of the areas you’ll examine. All of our modules are built with your employability in mind, to reflect the global challenges you’ll face as a future biomedical engineer.
Hub for vital research
Most of our academic team is based in the School of Engineering and Medical Science, but you’ll benefit from the expertise of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry too. You’ll meet patients and clinicians, as well as professionals from medical device companies.
We’re at the forefront of areas such as predictive modelling, regenerative medicine and healthcare robotics. Some of our researchers are using 3D printing to make functional human tissue implants and organ-on-a-chip models for testing new medicines. Others are using machine learning models to predict the risk of preterm birth, or artificial intelligence to help make diagnoses.

Our Biomedical Engineering programmes have been accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) under license from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.
Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).
An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Our BEng programmes meet the academic requirements for IEng and our MEng programmes meet the academic requirements for CEng.
Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Assessment typically includes a combination of coursework, written reports, projects, presentations, group work and exams in the summer.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
Queen Mary University of London welcomes applications from students currently studying Level 3 BTEC qualifications and will consider you for entry to the majority of our undergraduate courses. The typical entry requirements will vary according to the course you are applying for.
Some of our courses require specific subject knowledge which you may not be able to cover as part of a Level 3 BTEC qualification and we may therefore require additional Level 3 qualifications to ensure that you are suitably prepared for relevant courses. A small number of our courses do not accept BTEC qualifications for entry, either as a standalone qualification, or in combination with other qualifications at Level 3.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 33 credits M: 12 credits
We consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma in a Physics and Mathematics based discipline. Entry will normally be to the BEng or BSc. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall, with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 33 credits must be at Distinction and 12 credits at Merit or higher. Applications are considered on a case by case basis.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points
6,6,5 at HL including Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology
Extended Project
We consider applications from students offering an EPQ and may make an alternative offer to include three A levels, one grade lower than our usual requirement, along with a specific grade in the EPQ.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
A minimum of five GCSE passes to include English at grade C or 4 or an acceptable equivalent will be required.

All applicants to Queen Mary must show they meet a minimum academic English language standard for admission and to be successful on the course.
