Why study this course?
This programme will provide you with the skills to enable you to meet changing circumstances, whether these arise from a shift in your own sphere of employment, promotion to supervisory or management roles or from general changes in construction practices and the information technology environment.
Industry related projects will help develop skills like teamwork, planning, problem solving and communication, all of which you may need in the work place. HNC/HND courses are well recognised by employers and they will see that you have the technical skills and knowledge to perform related roles within their business.
About the course
This HND Construction course is a recognised Higher Education qualification. Students who complete this qualification successfully, may progress to the Level 5. This programme is delivered using a hybrid learning approach. Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to help students secure the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the workplace. They represent the latest in professional standards and provide opportunities for students to develop skills for work, for example by undertaking a group project, or responding to a client brief.

• Construction Site Management - understanding site operations: You’ll gain the ability to manage day-to-day operations on a construction site, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and safely.

• Construction Materials - a deep understanding of construction materials (e.g., concrete, steel, timber) and their properties, strengths, and applications in building structures.
• Project Management - knowledge of the principles of project management, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation using tools like Gantt charts or Critical Path Method (CPM).

Year 1 Modules (Level 4):
Construction Design Project - awareness of the design process and the information required to communicate the design, specify materials, provide instructions and facilitate precise costing.
Construction Technology - different technological concepts used to enable the construction of building elements, from substructure to completion.
The Construction Environment - explore the make-up and the impact of the construction industry on the environment and society.
Legal and Statutory Requirements in Construction - different areas of law that are relevant to the construction industry throughout the development process.
Digital Applications for Construction Information - develop the skills needed produce accurate and consistent construction information using industry-standard software.
Tender & Procurement - knowledge needed to be able to select a procurement route and an appropriate tendering method in the awarding of a project to a main contractor.
Science and Materials- health and safety; storage and use of materials, environmental and sustainable consideration in material choices and human comfort performance parameters.
Principals of Alternative Energy- knowledge of current and future energy technologies and to be able to apply that knowledge to the analysis and assessment of their effectiveness.
Year 2 Modules (Level 5):
Group Project (Pearson-set) - explore how to define roles in a collaborative team, recognising the skills of each member of the group.
Personal Professional Development - students have the opportunity to reflect on and contextualise the learning they gain from working in the industry.
Project Management - apply the theories and practices of project management to real-world scenarios.
Advanced Construction Drawing & Detailing - gain knowledge and skills in documenting projects using modern methods and technologies.
Construction Technology for Complex Buildings Projects - justify selected materials and construction methods used in complex buildings.
Sustainable methods of Construction - explored alternative construction methods that are fit for purpose, considered government policy implications and health and safety constraints associated with alternative construction methods.
Maintenance & Operations - knowledge and understanding of the maintenance and operations required in relation to the safe and efficient use of buildings.
Advanced Off-site Construction - knowledge and skills to be able to select appropriate forms of manufacture in support of specific design and delivery aims concerning building development and delivery.

Students are assessed using a range of different methods. These include tests, coursework, presentations, practical, posters, leaflets, role-play, and case studies. This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor performance.
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Students are expected to provide their own steel toe capped safety boots for site visits estimated £30.
General drawing equipment such as pencils, pens, Scientific Calculator, setsquares, compasses and scale rulers are also required. Estimated £30.
There are a number of sources of financial support available to students. These vary depending upon your course of study. Apply as soon as possible as closing dates vary between funds.
The main types of student finance are tuition fee and maintenance loans, which have to be paid back, and grants and bursaries, which do not have to be paid back.
