Course summary

A Philosophy and Economics degree at Southampton provides you with an opportunity to explore human welfare and social justice, political ideals and economic realities. Both of these subjects require rigorous analytical thought.

In your economics and philosophy degree with year abroad you can:

develop an understanding of philosophical questions such as ethics, reason and responsibility
study broad principles in economics as well as develop knowledge in your own specialist area, such as principles of finance, labour economics or econometrics
learn how to use your new skills to find employment and build a career as an economist
study abroad at one of our partner institutions
develop research and presentation skills

Our year abroad courses give undergraduates the opportunity to study for an additional academic year at a university in another part of the world. Destinations include Europe, Asia and North America.

Access to HE Diploma

60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit plus Grade B in AS Level Mathematics Grade B in Mathematics, Physics or Statistics A Level can be substituted for Grade B in AS Level Mathematics. Our preferred subjects are Philosophy, History, English, Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation, Sociology, Government and Politics. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. Pass, with 32 points overall with 16 at Higher Level, including 5 points at Higher or Standard Level in Mathematics: (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) 5 in Higher Level Mathematics, Physics or Statistics can be substituted for 5 in Standard Level Mathematics. Our preferred subjects are Philosophy, History, English, Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation, Sociology, Government and Politics. GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.

The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
