Acting for Screen

Course summary

This course encompasses a range of contemporary performance disciplines, from drama for feature film and presenting for television, through to promotion and influencing on the web and through social media. You will have the opportunity to develop the skills and attributes to excel in these areas whilst studying amongst a thriving community of diverse creatives.

As a specialist arts university we have the resources and expertise to provide you with the best possible education in acting for screen. You will experience working in a film studio with access to production equipment and rehearsal space, and have the opportunity to work with experienced industry professionals, who will provide you with feedback and guidance.

You will be encouraged to gain professional practice opportunities wherever possible, through working with students on our Filmmaking course or engagement with external productions. We will support you to develop networking skills and professional contacts. Working in an environment that includes filmmakers, musicians, animators, creative writers, marketeers, fine artists, and designers across a range of disciplines will provide opportunities for exciting collaborations and creative stimulation.

Modules

Year one – Begin your journey by mastering the principles of acting and camera acting techniques. This year focuses on building your understanding of performance essentials, including movement, voice, and emotional authenticity. You will also gain foundational knowledge of the technical aspects of screen acting, such as camera awareness and scene continuity.

Year two – In your second year, refine your craft and prepare for diverse modern acting contexts, from cinematic productions to digital and interactive media. You will have opportunities to partner with students from other creative disciplines to produce unique, interdisciplinary projects.

Year three – Your final year focuses on professional readiness. Develop an industry-standard showreel and CV, enhance your audition techniques, and explore career pathways in screen performance. The Final Screen Performance module provides a platform to showcase your skills and creativity in a professional-quality production, positioning you for success in the industry.

UCAS Tariff - 104 - 120 points

Leeds Arts University encourages applications from talented and motivated students. The University uses a wide range of methods to assess applications, these can include:

If you are successful in your application an offer will be made to you, if conditional we will ask for between 104 and 120 UCAS tariff points from any combination of A Levels/T Level/Extended Diploma/Foundation Diploma. The expected subjects will depend on the course you are applying for.

All applicants must have GCSE English Language or Literature at Grade 4/Grade C or above, or English Functional Skills Level 2 at Pass.

Examples of work

Our BA (Hons) Acting for Screen course is about working with screens in all their forms so we are keen to see how you can perform in any of these settings. We would like you to record and upload a video to YouTube, Vimeo or Weibo. The video should be made up of one or more solo performances of up to three minutes in total. The performed pieces may range from scenes from existing TV or cinema in any dramatic form or may be self-written as drama or as influence pieces designed for social media. You will need to state or caption each performance piece so that we can identify your source.

English
You’ll need to have passed GCSE English Language or English Literature at Grade 4/Grade C or above, or English Functional Skills Level 2 at Pass. For mature students, an Access to Higher Education qualification in art and design will also be acceptable to demonstrate English language ability.

Currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design?
If you are currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, you will have already achieved level 3 qualifications which carry UCAS tariff points. When considering your application, we will, collate your achieved tariff points with those you are predicted. You will also need a GCSE grade 4/ Grade C or above in English Language or English Literature or equivalent, or Functional Skills level 2 at a pass.
