Course summary

The MA Songwriting course is designed for solo artists, songwriters, bands, and producers serious about songwriting and composition.

Are you ready to create high-quality, career-defining music with the potential to change the world? Working as a solo writer, co-writer, or artist collaborator, that’s the level of motivation we are looking for.

Bringing your unique skills and creative energy to the table, we’ll equip you with the knowledge and confidence to establish yourself as a professional songwriter in the creative sector. You’ll master core songwriting and composition methodologies, navigate the path from demo to master, refine your production skills, work with producers in professional studios, and generate income streams while developing your critical thinking and research skills to a postgraduate level.

Within a collaborative community of like-minded artists, you'll attend in-house bootcamps, as well as our immersive WaterBear songwriting residential experience, and participate in weekly songwriting sessions. You'll receive one-to-one mentoring and teaching from accomplished music industry experts, both in class and via a virtual learning environment.

Throughout the course, you’ll strengthen your commercial knowledge, explore multiple income streams, develop your brand, build your repertoire, and finally, realise your artistic vision through a major commercial project.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to study, gaining this MA could also give you more professional choices, more potential income streams, and those all-important letters after your name.

This course is for musicians, artists and producers who want to take their musical output to the next level and hone their songwriting craft, as well as boost the commercial and entrepreneurial side of their music activity. You’ll work on creating high-quality songs and compositions, and upskill in other areas like contract negotiation, sync and publishing.

The course will take you on a journey of high-level skills development, critical reflection and the development of professional practice, culminating in the completion of a major commercial project. Areas of focus include music creation, storytelling, audio production and publishing, the development of personal skills and the realisation of ideas through submission of a major project.

You will develop autonomy whilst learning to apply critical thinking and research skills to your work. You'll gain academic proficiency and professional credibility. You'll also develop your entrepreneurialism to maximise areas of potential revenue and enterprise.

It’s awarded by one of the UK’s leading specialist universities for the creative industries, Falmouth University.
