Course summary

This programme brings together product design creativity with the technical knowledge and skills of engineering. Students develop as technically competent industrial designers, benefiting from the very latest in new product development techniques. The result is a modern engineering degree that will equip you with an excellent technical and creative grounding for a successful career in designing and developing new products. The degree is strongly project-based. You will work on many design projects of increasing complexity. In Year One, you will also study core engineering subjects. It gives you a broad and extended education at an advanced level, combining user-centred product design creativity with key aspects of engineering. You will graduate well-placed to play an important role in new product development, a top management priority in industry today.

This programme is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

Entry requirements

UCAS Tariff Not accepted

A level AAA

AAA in any A Level subjects. If no mathematical subject is taken at A Level, we require GCSE Mathematics Grade B (6) or above and the applicant will be required to take the Indicative Maths test.

For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level (Chemistry, Biology or Physics), a pass in the Science practical of each subject will be required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) D*D*D*

DDD*. If no mathematical subject is taken at A Level, GCSE Mathematics grade B/6 or above required, AND the applicant will be required to take the Indicative Maths test.

Access to HE Diploma D: 45 credits

Considered if taking a relevant subject. 45 Level 3 credits at Distinction, including 15 Level 3 credits in Mathematical or Computer Science modules.

Scottish Higher Not accepted

Scottish Advanced Higher AAA

Including Mathematics or Computer Science.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 36 points

36 overall, including 5 in Higher Level Mathematics or Computer Science.

Alternatively, 36 overall including 5 in Standard Level Mathematics (if not taken at a Higher Level) and the applicant will be required to take the Indicative Maths test.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024) A

Acceptable at grade A alongside AA at A Level including Mathematics or Computer Science.

Extended Project A

Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be AAA or AAB plus A in the EPQ.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) H1, H1, H2, H2, H2, H2

Including H1 in Mathematics or Computer Science.

We also require a minimum of H6 in Higher English or O3 in Ordinary English.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4/C required. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or who do not meet these GCSE requirements will be considered on an individual basis according to their circumstances.

Tuition fees for Home undergraduates
If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2024, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

For UK students applying for 2024 entry the Tuition Fees are £9,250.
