Finance and Spanish & Latin American Studies at Aberdeen brings the strong competitive advantage of a major international second language and culture to your powerful understanding of the principles of finance and wider business skills, making you an extremely sought-after graduate across industry, public and other sectors, with opportunities expected to grow further with growing internationalisation and innovations in the financial world.
In Finance you’ll explore financial management, corporate and personal finance, financial institutions, derivatives and the stock market. You’ll analyse and evaluate financial problems, and gain the practical skills to understand and use information from financial newspapers and documents. Your knowledge will grow in the dynamic, international environment of our Business School of over 40 nationalities, inspired by staff who are leaders in business practice and theory, in small classes with real-life scenarios, the input of employers, and the support of dedicated careers advisers.
You’ll also benefit from professional training facilities, such as our virtual Thomson Reuters Eikon trading floor, used by major financial services companies across the world, and integrating real activity in financial markets directly into students’ courses. Aberdeen is one of the most dynamic place to study and research the Spanish language and the cultural frameworks in countries where it is spoken. You’ll be equipped with the skills to communicate in a global language, spoken by 350 million native Spanish speakers in 19 Latin American states, Spain, and increasingly in the US.
As an integral part of your 4-year programme, you will spend half of year three developing your language skills as a teaching assistant or visiting student in a Spanish-speaking country.
The combination of your business, language and cultural skills will give you a special advantage to employers operating in multinational environments, including the energy industry which is important in the growing economies of Latin America.

Assessment method
Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: Coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; Practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; Written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses.
Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

Qualification requirements
A level - BBB
For First Year Entry a minimum of 3 A Levels at BBB.
For Second Year Entry a minimum of an A in the subject selected for Single Honours plus BB, or AB in the subjects selected for Joint Honours plus a further B.
In addition GCSE Maths is required, as well as GCSE in English or English Language is also required.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM
Minimum entry requirement: DDM in related subjects.
Scottish Higher - AABB
Applicants who achieve AABB or better over S4 and S5 are likely to be made an offer of admission. This may be unconditional or it may be conditional, dependent upon academic profile. Good performance in additional Highers / Advanced Highers may be required.
Note: we do not double count a Higher and Advanced Higher in the same subject, but we do consider that a B at Adv Higher is equivalent to an A grade at Higher.
National 5 English at minimum grade C and National 5 Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points
For entry into First Year, a minimum of 32 points required, including at least 5,5,5 at HL.
For entry into Second Year, a minimum of 36 points, including at 6, 6, 6 at Higher level in subject(s) selected.
English and Maths at a minimum of Standard level required.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H2, H2, H3, H3
A minimum of 5H with 3 at H2 AND 2 at H3, or AAABB obtained at a single sitting. The grading within band B must be at B2 or above.
O in English or in English Language AND Mathematics also required for entry.
Mathematics at National 5, Standard Grade, GCSE (or equivalent) is required for entry onto any of the Accountancy programmes.
There is no formal requirement for entry to the Spanish beginners' course. Students who already have a qualification in Spanish sit a placement test to determine the language course appropriate to them. All students, whether beginners or with a qualification such as Higher grade, can proceed to Honours, subject to satisfactory performance at levels 1 and 2.
