Course summary

This degree combines the study of English literature with modules designed to tap into your creative energy and shape it into poetry, prose, film or theatre. You will be taught by a number of internationally acclaimed writers and will have access to frequent public readings in the School by staff, visiting artists, and postgraduate students. We also work with the independent Northern Stage theatre, located on campus, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company to support your study of creative writing in the theatre.

A level - AAB

Either including English Literature or English Language and Literature, or including evidence of readiness to begin university-level study in literature (such as A-levels in other arts and humanities subjects).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 36 credits M: 9 credits

To include at least 9 Level 3 credits in English Literature at Distinction

Scottish Higher - AAABB

Including English. Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted. Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points

Either including English Literature or English Language at Higher Level, grade 5, or including evidence of readiness to begin university-level study in literature (such as study in other arts and humanities subjects).

Extended Project

If you offer the Level 3 Extended Project Qualification in a topic relevant to the degree programme, we may take this into account in our consideration of your application.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H1, H2, H2, H3

With minimum Grade H2 in English, or including evidence of readiness to begin university-level study in literature (such as study in other arts and humanities subjects).

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, D3, M2

Including English or including evidence of readiness to begin university-level study in literature (such as principle subjects in other arts and humanities subjects).
