Electrical engineers design and develop new technologies to generate and process power. The equipment they design is used to distribute electrical energy (including 'Smart Grid' technologies for renewable energy sources), and also supports many manufacturing industries.
Electrical engineering technologies now enable hybrid and electric vehicles, trains, ships and even aircraft.
Our course will give you the specialist electrical knowledge and skills that will help you be part of a more sustainable future. Through lab-based projects, working individually and in small teams, you'll learn essential problem solving and design skills.
You will spend year four in industry. You can apply for placements available to students on your course or can agree your own placement with an appropriate company. During your industrial year, you remain fully registered with the university, with regular meetings with your tutor.
By bringing together your numerical, analytical and technical knowledge, you will be confident in creating engineering solutions that industry are looking for.
All undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering initially follow a common programme of study, allowing them to change to a different plan up until the end of their third semester in year two. It is also possible to add or remove a year abroad and year in industry after joining the course. By year three, you can choose to specialise in the topics that interest you and suit your career aspirations.
If you are made an offer at MEng level, this will include a contextual offer for the BEng version of this course. This means that, if you do not achieve the required results to meet your MEng offer, but would have met the requirements to join the BEng version of your chosen course, you will automatically be offered a place on the BEng version of your chosen course.

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering - D*DD including Distinctions in modules Engineering Principles, Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and Further Engineering Mathematics.
As part of the application process, applicants taking the BTEC National Extended Diploma without A level maths who are predicted DDM or above will receive an invitation to have a meeting with an academic member of staff. This is informal with our primary objective being to ensure that our students are fully prepared for year one and will be successful on the course. Please note that applicants who do not attend the meeting will not receive an offer.
Applications are assessed on an individual basis. Where an offer is made, 15 graded level 3 credits must be from acceptable maths unit achieved at Distinction.
This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Advanced Higher grades AA including mathematics and one of physics, biology, chemistry, further mathematics, electronics or computer science.
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering or Applied Science accepted with A Level Mathematics grade A.
RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in any subject - D plus A Level Mathematics grade A and A Level grade A in one of Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Further Mathematics, Design and Technology: systems control or Design and Technology: design engineering
RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Engineering – D plus A Level Mathematics grade A and A Level grade A in any subject.
This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Higher grades AAABB including mathematics and one of physics, biology, chemistry, further mathematics, electronics or computer science.

If you have already achieved your EPQ at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your EPQ you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your EPQ. If you qualify for a contextual offer, your EPQ will be taken into consideration and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer. Please note that if you qualify for an enhanced contextual offer, your EPQ will not be taken into consideration as we are unable to make any further adjustments to your offer.

Core Maths qualifications offered by other exam boards are also considered for an alternative offer.

For applicants with T Level qualifications without A level mathematics the Foundation Year (H100) is recommended
European Baccalaureate - 85% overall including 85% (8.5) in Mathematics 5 and 85% (8.5) in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.
