Course summary
The Urban Mission pathway and the parallel Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate resources creative, transformative and innovative thinking and practice in Urban missions and ministry, and supports continuing professional development. It offers the opportunity to explore approaches to urban mission and ministry and provides a foundation in reading the multiple facets of the city, including its culture, nature, and needs. It engages with different approaches to ministry in urban environments helping to deepen understanding and sharpen practice.
This course is delivered in both Glasgow and Manchester with full-time and flexible part-time routes making study accessible for everyone – wherever you are in the world!
The MA in Theology (Urban Mission) pathway and its parallel Postgraduate Diploma course both have four course units. The Postgraduate Certificate course has two course units. These course units are structured around ten two-and-a-half hour seminars. The seminars are led by specialists in the appropriate disciplines. In-depth reading, group discussion and preparation of written assignments are all included within the course units.
Selected units in the Urban Mission pathway will be delivered in Glasgow, on the campus of SSCM (Scottish School of Christian Mission).

Modules
Core module: Urban ministry and mission: foundations. Elective units: Theology and culture; theological reflection; social and pastoral implications of Christian holiness; the church and the city; compassionate ministry: the church and social transformation; Christian engagement with Islam; independent study (urban mission); contemporary missiology and culture: mapping the landscape; contemporary missiology and culture: emerging issues; Christian approaches to humanitarian/development practices; understanding criminal behaviour; responding to criminal behaviour.
Assessment method
Assessment methods include essays, presentations, seminar participation and final dissertation.

Entry requirements
Good Honours degree in a relevant subject (exceptional entry considered). International applicants will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or its equivalent.
