Course summary

Biochemistry is the foundation for understanding all biological processes. Develop an international perspective of how organisms work at the molecular level in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and in many chemical and health-related industries with our accredited BSc (Hons) Biochemistry with Studies in the USA degree.

Biochemistry has become the foundation for understanding all biological processes. Positioned at the cutting-edge of research, Biochemistry is an exceptionally versatile scientific discipline to study at university. The knowledge and methods developed by biochemists are applied to all fields of medicine, in agriculture and in many chemical and health related industries.

Take your scientific knowledge further

Delivered across three years - or four if you choose to include a placement, our Royal Society of Biology-accredited Biochemistry course will help you to explore important scientific subjects including biological chemistry, organic chemistry, and genetics. You'll spend your second year of study at our partner insitution, the University of Toledo, in USA and continue to build your biochemistry knowledge. Returning to Salford for your final year, you can choose from a selection of specialised modules and complete your studies with a supervised research project in a topic of your choice.

Throughout your studies, you will develop strong laboratory skills. As a biochemistry student, you will spend lots of time in our advanced Bodmer laboratories while in the UK. These well-equipped, purpose-built facilities ensure your learning remains on the cutting-edge of innovation and discovery. The labs host industry-standard instrumentation, including cell culture facilities, histology specimen preparation station, fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy.

Take your studies stateside
Drawing on a 30 year partnership, on this pathway will spend a year of study at the University of Toledo in Ohio, USA. Alongside making new friends and a lifetime of memories, you will be inspired by an international science department considered to be a prominent leader in taking research from the laboratory to industry.

Get closer to industry
You will also have the opportunity to complete a placement year between years two and three, which is arranged with our support. Recent students have completed placement years at AstraZeneca, the Cancer Research UK Manchester institute, and the Respiratory Physiology Unit at the Royal Aintree Hospital in Liverpool. By successfully completing a placement, you can again 'Advanced Degree Accreditation' to your degree award.

Features
• Develop laboratory and research skills ready for your graduate career
• Include an optional industry placement, where you can apply your learning across a variety of industries
• Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology
• Spend your second year at our partner institution, the University of Toledo in the USA

Modules

Year one modules may include: Biological Chemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Skills, Study Skills. In year two at the University of Toledo, you can choose from a range of modules similar to those offered in year two of the degree at Salford. You will be supported by a tutor based in Salford whom you will have had as your 1st year tutor. You will also be supported by a local tutor in Toledo. Year three modules may include: Research Project and Professional Skills, Biotechnology, Biochemistry of Drugs and Diseases, Science and Industry, plus one from the following: Cancer: Bench to Bedside, Advances in Pathophysiology, Clinical Immunology.
