Course summary
Therapeutic Radiography is a rewarding career that is challenging and has a combination of science, technology and patient care. Our radiotherapy course will teach you to work with patients of all ages, to help relieve and/or cure the symptoms of their cancer.
As the only training centre for therapeutic radiography in the West Midlands region, our BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography course will prepare you to be a fully qualified Therapeutic Radiographer once you have graduated.
On qualification, you will be entitled to apply for registration with the regulator, the Health and Care Professions Council (the HCPC), to gain registered practitioner status and be able to practice in the UK either within the NHS or the private sector.
As a Therapeutic Radiographer, you will be responsible for preparing and administering radiation to cancer patients, operating highly technical radiation equipment, imaging patients with the latest technology, monitoring patients’ progress and giving advice as they progress through radiotherapy treatment.
You will develop specialist skills by spending time on clinical placements within hospital cancer centres, providing you with plenty of experience to develop professionally and gain valuable employability skills. Your academic studies will take place at our City South Campus, which features a radiotherapy treatment couch with laser alignment system, a Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) and advanced treatment planning facilities. With use of these dedicated facilities, you will confidently develop essential skills within a safe educational environment.

UCAS Tariff 120 points
If your level 3 qualifications do not meet the UCAS tariff for this course, you may be offered a place on our Foundation Year instead. You do not need to submit a separate application but will automatically be considered for this if your predicted grades fall below the UCAS entry tariff.

120 UCAS tariff points from three A Levels. Grades BBB (or equivalent). Required subjects: Science subject at A Level or level 3 equivalent, at Grade B or above. Excluded subjects: General Studies; Critical Thinking; Extended Project.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
120 UCAS tariff points. Diploma accepted with one A Level or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Certificate accepted with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Diploma - accepted subjects: Science. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 30 points
Obtain a minimum of 30 points overall. Required subjects: One of Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Higher level. For students who do not already hold a GCSE in Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, grade 5 in Maths (Standard level) from the IB Diploma will be accepted. For students who do not already hold a GCSE in English Language at grade C/4 or above, English Language (Standard level) from the IB Diploma will be accepted. For English A, this must be grade 4 or above; for English B, this must be grade 5.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)
Minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects. Required subjects: Science related subject at Higher level.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above. If you do not have these or are not undertaking them, we accept other level 2 equivalents, or we may ask you to pass BCU's GCSE equivalency tests.
T Level M
Merit overall. Accepted subjects: Science.
Welsh Baccalaureate: 120 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Required subjects: Either this qualification or an accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be in a relevant Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, at Grade B or Distinction). Science subject must be at grade B or Distinction.
OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 120 UCAS tariff points. Extended Diploma - accepted subjects: Applied Science. Diploma - accepted subjects: Either this qualification or the accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be a relevant Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Science subject must be at Grade B or Distinction.
WJEC Level 3 qualifications: 120 UCAS tariff points. Required subjects: Either this qualification or an accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be in a relevant Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Science subject must be at Grade B or Distinction.
- Successful candidates will be required to obtain a satisfactory occupational health check and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check via the Faculty prior to enrolling on this course.
- Qualifications, personal statement, interview and references all form part of the selection criteria for this course.
- Applicants must normally have evidence of formal study within the last five years. However, we are sometimes able to waive this requirement if a candidate has a significant amount of professional experience in a relevant field, for example healthcare, social care, or education.
References: A second reference for Access/BTEC students from the original referee is to be provided to the institution by the end of June of the enrolment year.
Height statement: Most patients are treated at a height of 120-130cm above the ground. You should be able to comfortably and safely manipulate a patient lying at this height. If not, please contact the Course Leader before you start the course so the team can ensure that the necessary risk assessments and adjustments can be in place in a timely manner, to ensure your safe practice. Any disclosure will not prejudice your application.
Clinical visit: A satisfactory experience visit to a clinical department is desirable but not compulsory. Clinical visit evidence forms are required as part of this process.

Additional fee information
- The Government is proposing to increase the cap on full-time regulated tuition fees to £9,535 from 2025/26 onwards and the University is planning on increasing fees to that maximum level once legislation is enacted. Part-time fees are charged pro-rata, where applicable.
