Course summary

Your introduction to degree-level mathematics will leave no stone unturned, with a broad range of topics including discrete mathematics, linear algebra, calculus, statistics and decision mathematics. In our high-tech teaching laboratories, you’ll learn to program in a mathematical language, using software packages that are commonly used for both commercial and research purposes.

As you progress, you’ll be able to choose from a range of subjects that reflect your interests and career aspirations, culminating in a chance to apply your learning in project work. Typical areas of study include further calculus and linear algebra, numerical methods and modelling, mathematics of computer graphics, number theory, cryptography, operational research, financial mathematics, statistics, neural networks, dynamical systems, and group theory.

  • Our maths degree course is approved by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).

  • We are investing £115m to transform the way we teach and you learn in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry, and provide new and improved teaching spaces, including a computing and mathematics studio.

  • Our excellent facilities include 14 teaching laboratories with high-specification PCs with specialist, industry-standard software running on Windows and Linux operating systems.

  • You will have access to regular online video support, which provides additional explanation and guidance on a range of topics, from coursework and exam paper guidance to software tutorials.

UCAS Tariff - 112 - 120 points

A level - BBC

Grades BBC or equivalent, to include grade C in at least one of the following subjects: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics or Pure Mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma

Pass Access to HE Diploma in Mathematics with a minimum score of 106 UCAS Tariff points.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 28 points

To include HL 5 in Mathematics and HL 4 or SL 5 in English

GCSE grade C/4 in English Language or Level 2 Functional Skills English

and

GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics or Level 2 Functional Skills Mathematics
