Course summary
Study the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models in this degree.
This discipline, known as econometrics, is used by economists to test theories and analyse the impacts of policies and events on the health of the economy. This course combines the study of economics and econometrics with a wide range of optional units.
Econometrics is a vital tool for economists because, unlike natural sciences where controlled experiments are used to determine the effect of one thing on another, it is impossible to hold the economy constant while tinkering with a single variable. Econometrics provides the scientific means to overcome the issue using empirical observations.
Alongside your mandatory modules in econometrics and the research you will carry out in the applied economics dissertation, you will be able to choose units that interest you from a wide range of optional modules within the School of Economics, the University of Bristol Business School and other parts of the University during your degree.
Previous economics options have included: Behavioural Economics; Environmental Economics; Data Science; and Current Economic Problems.
The Study Abroad course extends your degree to four years, with your third year spent studying economics in English at a top-ranking university in Europe or farther afield before returning to Bristol for your final year.
This course combines the challenging, broad academic content of our economics degrees with an overseas dimension that gives you a true awareness of a different culture and reflects the international nature of the economy.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD
D*DD in any Applied General BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, AND A in Maths at A-level (or equivalent).
Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits
Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Science, or Computing (or similar titles). The 45 graded Level 3 credits must include: at least 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit or above; and at least 15 credits from Mathematics units, of which at least 12 (including algebra, calculus and trigonometry) must be at Distinction.
OR Access to HE Diploma in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Psychology, Law or History (or similar titles), with the 45 graded Level 3 credits including at least 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit or above PLUS A in A-level Mathematics.

Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.

Requirements for principal subjects are as for A-level, where D1/ D2 is A*, D3 is A, M1/ M2 is B, and M3 is C.
European Baccalaureate: 88% overall, with 8.5 in Mathematics.
