Course summary
Genetics is at the heart of modern developmental sciences. The drive to understand more about the processes behind inherited diseases has led to huge advances in many fields including embryology, stem cell biology and cancer research. On this course, you’ll learn about genetics across the board from the foundations right up to the most recent breakthroughs. It’s a course designed to help you kickstart your career in a wide range of healthcare professions, pharmaceuticals, genetic counselling, or medical research.
You’ll gain a firm foundational knowledge on the application of genetics to medical and biological sciences research. In addition to learning theory, you’ll gain practical hands-on experience in the labs in our new £18.2 million facilities.
Benefit, also, from gaining real-world experience by participating in an optional supervised work placement in your area of interest, available after your second year in the course. This placement year allows you to put your knowledge and skills to the test at sites in the UK or abroad.

Assessment method
Year 1 shares modules with our other biological sciences courses and lays the foundation for your study of advanced topics such as molecular evolution in Year 2 and applied molecular genetics in the final year.
You’ll be taught through a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. Assessment will include written exams, multiple choice questions, oral presentations, and assessment of laboratory skills. The final year research project contributes to your degree classification.

Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 112 - 104 points
from a combination of Level 3 qualifications including a grade B in a relevant Science subject at A Level.
A level - BBC - BCC
including a grade B in a relevant Science subject. The endorsement for practical work is an essential part of Science A Level study, and is a requirement for entry to our degree course.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM
in Applied Science.
Access to HE Diploma - M: 45 credits
or above to include modules in a relevant science subject.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
112-104 UCAS tariff points from International Baccalaureate qualifications which should include modules in a relevant science subject.
T Level - M
in Science including a grade B in A Level Chemistry or Biology.
