We welcome applicants interested in a range of topics across the film and television studies programme.
Our academic staff are active researchers and willing to supervise students in their areas of expertise. We are leaders in the field, with specialist expertise in:
US film and television
Hollywood studies
East Asian and global cinema
new media, industrial and audience analysis
film and television history
Current and recent students in the department have worked on a variety of topics including:

cult film
media audiences

public service broadcasting
transnational and transmedia film and television industries
The department spearheads the University of Nottingham’s lead higher education partnership with the British Film Institute and collaborates with local media institutions such as the Broadway Cinema (the regional film theatre).
It also has strong links with Hollywood studios such as Fox Searchlight, and UK media companies like Red Bee Media, where unique internship opportunities are available to students.
Building on its close industry connections, the department is home to the Institute for Screen Industries Research.

You will complete a written thesis of up to 100,000 words, with expert support and advice from your academic supervisor(s). You will also take a verbal examination called a viva voce where you explain your project in depth to an examination panel.
