Course summary
As an English Literature student at Bangor, you will study the full range of literature from the medieval to the contemporary and develop your individual interests. In Year One, you will gain highly employable key skills in critical analysis, alongside a grounding in major literary works and popular genres. In Years Two and Three, there is an exciting choice of modules focused on historical periods and those focused on genres and topics (e.g. Arthurian, Fantasy, Welsh writing in English, Dystopian), and the chance to develop your own research project.
As one of the oldest English Literature departments in the UK, we have a strong history of world-class research and teaching. Our specialisms range from the literatures of the Middle Ages, Renaissance period, through to Victorian and Modernist forms. Our lecturers are established names in their respective fields, publishing on a range of topics, including gender and devotion, materiality and book history, social networks and infrastructure. Your time with us will enable you to engage directly with this thriving research culture, and to build your own writing and research skills, which are highly valued by employers.
‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. Bangor UniversityPolicingWhilst studying at Bangor University, I plan on applying to North Wales Police as a Special Constable. The SC has all the same training, equipment and rights as a standard Police Officer however it is voluntary. This will give me invaluable experience into the world and policing alongside my a degree which I love. I go to Fitness First (one of the many local gyms) everyday other than Sunday, I really enjoying working out and found its a great outlet for stress and also improves my physical and mental health, I also follow a strict diet and skincare routine which also helps with the stresses that may arise during University life. English Literature / English Language / English preferred but not required. General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDM
We will also consider other BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma
Pass required.
Scottish Higher
Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Pass required. Including H5 in English Literature or English Language.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Extended Project
Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. We also welcome applications from mature learners and/or those with other qualifications are considered on individual merit. Additional fee information
On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
