Course summary

BA (Hons) Musical Theatre will develop your core performance skills across acting, singing, and dance and will help you develop as an individual creative musical theatre performer.

Delivered by highly skilled, internationally experienced professional musical theatre performers, musical directors, and choreographers, BA (Hons) Musical Theatre provides an elite training environment. It offers intensive, rigorous conservatoire-style training in Musical Theatre for those aiming for professional careers in the field.

The course is highly physical and intensively taught. A distinctive element of the programme is the broad range of professional performance skills developed:

  • Singing (one-to-one)

  • Singing (ensemble)

  • Music theory

  • Acting through song

  • Acting

  • Voice and accents

  • Musical theatre repertoire

  • Jazz

  • Tap

  • Ballet

  • Devising

  • Performance

Supporting lectures and seminars cover other professional areas such as anatomy and kinesiology, historical and contextual studies, and entrepreneurship. This three-year BA (Hons) Degree in Musical Theatre has been specifically designed for students who require a diverse and flexible skill-set that merges disciplines with a strong sense of personal identity.

Taught at the MGA Academy of Performing Arts in Edinburgh.

Year 1 is focused on the development of the technical and intellectual skills required for Musical Theatre:

  • Singing 1
  • Anatomy and Kinesiology
  • Critical and Contextual Studies 1

Year 2 is focused on building on the skills developed in year 1 and developing integrated performance skills:

  • Musical Theatre Dance 2
  • Acting and Voice 2
  • Singing 2
  • Performance Workshop
  • Critical and Contextual Studies 2

Year 3 is focused on developing advanced performance skills and advanced professional expertise in preparation for launch into industry.

Assessment method

Assessment tasks vary according to the learning outcomes. They can include group performance presentations, solo presentations, written assignments, and contribution to public performance projects.
