Course summary

Aberystwyth University’s Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the most established and experienced departments of its kind and offers you an opportunity to study human geography in one of the most picturesque locations in Europe. Situated on the coast of Cardigan Bay and surrounded by a great diversity of beautiful environments, including marine, moorland, mountain and grassland, the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is uniquely placed to make the most of the stunning landscapes that surround it, providing you with a fabulous variety of fieldwork and recreational opportunities.

This three year Bachelor of Science honours degree in Physical Geography will equip you with the skills, abilities and expertise to face and engage with the challenges facing society today.

As a large dynamic Geography community we are able to offer you an extremely broad range of geographical specialisms, opportunities and facilities which include: River catchment processes; Glaciology; Biogeography; Quaternary Environmental change; Current trends in Geohazards; Urban sustainability; Regional Development; Political and Cultural geography; Fieldwork opportunities in New Zealand, Crete, New York, and Ireland. We offer our students travel awards available each year to fund your own adventures (up to £400). You will learn and benefit from our modern facilities with the latest technology to enhance learning and our fully stocked laboratories with an array of analytical instruments e.g. mass spectrometers and core scanners of which can be used for fieldwork and independent study.

If you are interested in studying abroad or undertaking a work experience placement then our sister courses Physical Geography with integrated studying abroad (F845) and Geography with integrated year industry (F846) will be of interest to you. The syllabus of these two courses are identical to this course F840, however, you will have an additional year to undertake a study abroad or work experience placement.

Our graduates have, for example, found employment as environmental consultants, planners, civil servants, surveyors, and in education to name a few.

The University welcomes undergraduate applications from students studying the Access to Higher Education Diploma, provided that relevant subject content and learning outcomes are met. We are not able to accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas as a general qualification for every undergraduate degree course.

A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Business, Psychology, Mathematics, and Science degree schemes also require a minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in Mathematics and/or Science at GCSE (or equivalent).
