Course summary
Is there a god? Are our minds separate from our bodies? How much can we ever really know? On this 3-year BA Philosophy degree, you'll grapple with some of the most profound questions. You'll also develop critical thinking and analysis skills that will be essential in your future career.
Philosophy at Southampton is ranked 6th in the UK.*
You'll explore questions in core areas, such as ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, or political philosophy. You'll also apply philosophical thought to practical questions on subjects including global poverty, future generations, sex and gender, or artificial intelligence.
Whether you want to know more about Nietzsche, or to engage with Ethics, the Philosophy of Maths, or Aesthetics, you'll be able to choose from a wide range of options that draw upon our cutting-edge research. A placement year abroad will let you experience a new culture and view philosophy from a new perspective. You'll choose a partner university at a placement in Europe, Asia, Australasia or North America.
Our digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audiovisual centre. Supported by an expert team, these technologies will enable you to start making and exploring in new and immersive ways.

Modules
You will study a variety of topics that cover the fundamental aspects of Philosophy, and you will have the opportunity to tailor your course to your interests by choosing some of your modules. Assessment method
On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own).
You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as debates, essays, oral presentations, dissertations, individual and group projects.
You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)
We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
