Course summary

The course prepares the students to engage and work as artistic practitioners across a broad range of artistic make-up disciplines, this is achieved through a number of modules which explore and engage students in developing an understanding of theoretical and professional practices through the development of critical, analytical and performance based skills. The course structure also encourages innovative ideas in visual imagery, exploring creativity and linking to the needs of the media make-up industry.

The educational focus of the programme involves students building on existing knowledge and skills to enable their professional and academic development, and supports the concept of lifelong learning and continuing professional development. The student will develop a range of transferable skills and independent learning, promoting the development of high standards in communication in preparation for employment or further study

There is a clear work-related element that reflects the need to apply knowledge and skills within the workplace and to make tangible links between theory and practice in the educational sector. This will not only provide students with valuable work-related experience but also greatly enhance their employability on completion of the programme.

Assessment method

A range of assessment methods are used and could be in the form of the following:

• Presentations
• Practical Assessments
• Learning Journal
• Portfolios
• Written Projects
• Work-related employment

You will be required to complete 420 study hours within college and 780 self directed study hours.

You are expected to undertake a minimum 25 hours of work-related learning with the encouragement of engagement in further experience where possible within a relevant area of special effects related industry practice. The workplace provides opportunities for you to achieve direct experience of working as a special Effects Make-Up Artist, engage with future employers, and provides support in establishing a database of industry contacts.

Students who have completed the University Preparatory Year – Make-up Artistry will offered direct entry on to the FdA.

Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity will be considered and may be invited to interview

Interview
Applicants may be invited to attend an interview where they will be asked to provide examples of written work, a portfolio of images demonstrating their skills within make-up / hair, or provide examples of designs work/illustrations. They will also hear more about the course structure, see the facilities and meet the staff. The whole process could take between 2-3 hours. There is availability for a remote interview for overseas/applicants who have to travel; links to e-portfolios and written work will be submitted electronically prior to the remote Interview taking place.

Additional fee information

You are required to buy or have the equivalent kits; airbrush (£50), Special Effects Make-up (£350), Hair (£200), brushes (£100), sculpting tools (£30)
(Order forms for kits are given to students within welcome packs prior to September).

Assignments and portfolio images will need printing. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page.

The books required for the course are available from the library. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for their course at their own expense.

Additional costs may be incurred for the following:

• There are voluntary day trips available in year 1 and 2 where contributions are required (starting from £40 depending on the package)
• You will need to purchase a digital storage device up to 1TB
• Costumes and Models must be sourced for each practical assessment; the cost for this varies dependent on student preferences but must be paid for and sourced independently
• A professional portfolio (estimated to start at £40)
• Learning Journals (estimated to start at £6 each) will also need to be purchased
• SD card for camera £10
• Batteries for use in the photographic studio (AA)
• You will be required to purchase additional postiche the cost of this will be dependent on student preference and designs
• Bald cap £20 (not compulsory)
• Ready-made prosthetic piece £40 (not compulsory)

It is expected that students purchase the above items independently, and are responsible for obtaining these items prior to starting the course in September.
