Course summary

Our BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering and Production degree course will provide you with the creative skills and versatility you need to succeed in a constantly evolving, challenging industry.

You’ll have access to world-class facilities so that you can experiment with music production, sound engineering, audio electronics and much more.

Available in the UK to home and international students, the course enables you to study a diverse programme, ensuring students are incredibly well equipped for employment within the industry once completing their degree.

Our students come from around the world and our Sound Engineering and Production course reflects this diversity.

Professional Placement Year

This course offers an optional professional placement year. This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, following successful completion of your second year, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career. Some students even return to the same employers after completing their studies.

If you choose to pursue a placement year, you will need to find a suitable placement to complement your chosen area of study. You will be able to draw on the University’s extensive network of local, regional, and national employers, and the support of our Careers teams. If you are able to secure a placement, you can request to be transferred to the placement version of the course.

Please note that fees are payable during your placement year, equivalent to 20% of the total full-time course fee for that year.

£1,000 scholarships for 2025/26

If you apply to BCU by 30 June 2025, you could be eligible for one of our £1,000 scholarships:

  • Accelerate – if you are from a lower income family or household

  • High Achievers’ – if you achieve 144 UCAS points or more from your main three qualifications

UCAS Tariff - 112 points

Please note: If you qualify for our BCU Accelerate scheme, you could receive an offer that is two grades below our normal entry requirements.

A level - BBC

A Level: 120 UCAS tariff points / BBC (or equivalent). Must include one from Technology, Science, Mathematics or Computing at A Level or level 3 equivalent. AS Level: Must be in a different subject to A Levels. A maximum of four subjects will be considered

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

112 UCAS tariff points. Accepted subjects: Technology, Science, Mathematics or Computing. Diploma accepted with one A Level or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Certificate accepted with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications

Access to HE Diploma

Pass with 60 credits. At least 45 credits at level 3 with 30 credits at Merit or Distinction. Accepted subjects: Technology, Science, Mathematics, or Computing

Scottish Higher

112 UCAS tariff points from three Advanced Highers (CCD) or two Advanced Highers (CD) plus two Highers (CC). Required subjects: One from Technology, Science, Mathematics or Computing

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. Required subjects: One of Computer Science, Chemistry, Design Technology or Physics at Higher Level

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

Minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects. Required subjects: Technology, Science, Mathematics or Computing at Higher Level

Merit overall. Accepted subjects: Digital Production, Design and Development; Digital Support Services; Digital Business Services; Media, Broadcast and Production

Welsh Baccalaureate: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Required subjects: One from Technology, Science, Mathematics or Computing

OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Accepted subjects: Technology, Science, or Computing

NCFE CACHE Level 3 qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered alongside A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, one of which must be Technology, Science, or Computing

WJEC Level 3 qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered alongside A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, one of which must be Technology, Science, or Computing

Additional fee information

  • The Government is proposing to increase the cap on full-time regulated tuition fees to £9,535 for 2025/26 and the University is planning on increasing fees to that maximum level once legislation is enacted. Part-time fees are charged pro-rata, where applicable.
