Course summary
Switch on your career in electrical and electronic engineering at The University of Manchester. We're home to one of the largest departments dedicated to the subject in the UK, have fantastic links with industry, and have taught the discipline here since 1905. More than 100 years later, we continue to help solve the day's biggest energy problems.
The use of electricity, for example, is fundamental to modern life. Without a secure supply, society in its current form would collapse. Consequently, the importance of efficient and sustainable generation, secure distribution, and intelligent user devices cannot be overstated. This will be a lifetime challenge facing the next generation - and electrical and electronic engineers have a vital role to play..
Spending a year in industry will not only develop your business, team working and transferable skills - all highly sought-after by employers - it will also highlight the broad range of careers on offer to you and guide your choice of subject options. You'll place yourself in a great position to move your career forward.
In the final year you will complete a team project directly funded by industry or inspired by industrial needs. Past projects have included developing an instrumented training wheelchair for para-athletes, creating a new core infrastructure for a robot orchestrahaptic glove for remote handling, and developing a cyber-secure electricity management system in smart cities.

D*DDWe consider the National Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with grades D*DD including Distinction in Further Engineering Mathematics. This should be in combination with a grade A in A-level Mathematics.
Access to HE Diploma
Each application is considered individually. Applicants should contact the Undergraduate Admissions team to discuss their particular circumstances and to check the suitability of their Access course.
As a guide, we require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma in an engineering-related subject, with a minimum of 60 credits. 45 credits must be awarded at Level 3 with a Distinction grade (including 15 Level 3 credits with Distinction in Mathematics). Students are also required to have a grade A in A Level Mathematics with a pure element.
Scottish Higher
We require Advanced Highers, or Advanced Highers combined with Highers, in one of the following combinations:
- Three Advanced Highers with grades AAA, including Mathematics and either Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics of Mechanics
- Two Advanced Highers with grades AA, including Mathematics and either Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics of Mechanics, alongside two Highers with grades AA in two different academic subjects (these can be achieved in a previous sitting)
English Language not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 grade B / Intermediate 2 grade B / Standard Grade Credit level grade 2).

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
37 points37 points overall with 7,6,6 in Higher Level subjects, including Higher Level Mathematics and Higher Level Physics or Chemistry.
For this programme of study, we will accept either of the following subjects to meet our Mathematics requirement: Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
Applicants studying the International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme (IBCP) should contact the academic School prior to applying so that their academic profile can be considered.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma/Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and requires two A-Levels, including Mathematics and one science subject from the A-Level list above, to be included within this.
The minimum grade required will normally be the same as the lowest grade listed in the A-Level entry requirements.
Extended Project
The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.
Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal
D3, D3, D3D3 in three Principal subjects, including Mathematics and either Physics, Further Mathematics or Chemistry.
We also consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A-level subjects, in three distinct subjects.
The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives and Research (GPR) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. However, the qualification will not form part of your offer conditions.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education, typically five GCSEs/IGCSEs, including acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to at least grade B/6 in GCSE/IGCSE English Language and grade C/4 in GCSE/IGCSE Mathematics.
Students eligible for a contextual offer will be required to evidence English language proficiency at GCSE English Language grade C/4.
GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language.

Not acceptedThe University recognises a number of foundation programmes as suitable for entry to this undergraduate programme:
Applicants completing the Northern Consortium (NCUK) International Foundation Year or INTO Manchester International Foundation in Science and Engineering are required to achieve A*AA including Mathematics and either Physics or Further Mathematics, and an EAP score of A.
A good performance in local examinations before starting the foundation year, particularly in mathematics and physical science, is also required. You are also encouraged to apply prior to the UCAS equal consideration deadline.
Applicants studying other Foundation programmes should contact the academic School to check if their qualification is recognised for entry to this programme and for specific entry requirements.
