Course summary
A combined English and Linguistics course offers one of the most stimulating university degrees.
Studying English will give you new ways of thinking about the world and new possibilities of expression. Studying linguistics will enable you to understand and interpret language and to learn the science behind how we communicate. Studying English and Linguistics together offers you the exciting opportunity to study both the art and science of language. Staff in both departments are world-renowned for their research, which covers every period of history, many major languages and most literary genres around the world. Watch our Linguistics video. Get a head start in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at York. At York, you'll benefit from being able to take TEFL modules in-house, as part of your degree. You can count the work you complete in your TEFL modules towards a qualification. This teacher training programme, also offered in-house, can qualify you to teach English to non-native speakers.

Essential Subjects:
English Literature or English Language and Literature (or equivalent) at grade A is essential.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD
We consider a range of BTEC qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels, or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications.
A Level in English Literature or English Language and Literature (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is essential. We may also consider relevant units in your BTEC as A Level English Literature equivalent.
Access to HE Diploma - D: 36 credits M: 9 credits
Pass Access to HE Diploma with 36 credits at Distinction including at least 9 in English Literature-related units and 9 at Merit or higher.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 35 points
With 6 in Higher Level English Literature or English Language and Literature.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024) - A - B
We will consider this qualification alongside or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications, as equivalent to one A Level.
Extended Project - A
If you achieve an A or higher at EPQ, you may be eligible for an alternative offer up to one A Level grade (or equivalent) below our typical offer.
Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, D3, M2
Cambridge Pre-U English Literature at grade D3 is essential.
OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - DDD
We consider a range of OCR qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels, or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications.
A Level in English Literature or English Language and Literature (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is essential. We may also consider relevant units in your OCR Cambridge Technical as A Level English Literature equivalent.
T Level
We consider a range of T Level qualifications, in combination with an A Level in English Literature or English Language and Literature (or equivalent qualification). Please contact us to discuss your qualifications.
