Course summary

The main aerospace engineering topics you’ll study include aerodynamics, aero structures, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, communications, avionics and aircraft materials. The programmes include a two day flight test course in a Jetstream aircraft. Our Aerospace Engineering degree programmes are double accredited (by the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers). This programme is very similar to that of the Aerospace Engineering degree programmes (H425 and H421) but also introduces elements of pilot studies for students interested in becoming pilots. In Year One, the Pilot studies module (based on the PPL ground school syllabus) complements the flight training programme of 20 hours which is mandatory. In Year Two, the Pilot studies module is based on the Air Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL) ground school syllabus.

The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Work placement/Year in industry - Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience to enhance their employability by applying for a summer internship or a year placement with an approved company/organisation. The School of Engineering MEng and BEng with a year in industry programmes are available to all* students. Whilst the School of Engineering and the University will provide the necessary support and guidance, it is the responsibility of the student to secure an industrial placement. Applicants should note that industrial placements are highly sought after and competition to be accepted into one can be significant. They therefore cannot be guaranteed. Students who fail to secure a suitable placement offer will transfer back to the standard version of the programme without a year in industry.

Please note that international applicants for this programme require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. The ATAS certificate must be obtained before applying for a Tier 4 visa. You can submit an ATAS application up to 6 months before the programme start date, even if the offer is still conditional. Including Mathematics and a second science Applicants following the modular Mathematics A Level must be studying A Level Physics or Further Mathematics as the second science (or must be studying at least one Mechanics module in their Mathematics A Level). Acceptable second sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, Electronics, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology Human Biology, Statistics, Further Mathematics and Physics. For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level (Chemistry, Biology or Physics), a pass in the Science practical of each subject will be required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

D*DD in an accepted BTEC and grade B in A Level Mathematics. Accepted BTECs include Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Engineering.

Access to HE Diploma - Not accepted

Scottish Higher - Not accepted

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*D

D*D in an accepted BTEC and grade B in A Level Mathematics. Accepted BTECs include Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Engineering.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D*

Distinction* in BTEC alongside grades BB at A Level in Mathematics and an accepted second Science Subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 35 points

35 including 5 in Higher Level Mathematics and 5 in Higher Level Physics

Extended Project - A

Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be AAB or ABB plus A in the EPQ.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H1, H1, H2, H2, H2, H3

H1,H1,H2,H2,H2,H3 including H1 and H2 in Mathematics and a second science.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Mathematics and English at grade 4/C required. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or who do not meet these GCSE requirements will be considered on an individual basis according to their circumstances.

Tuition fees for Home undergraduates
If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2024, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

For UK students applying for 2024 entry the Tuition Fees are £9,250.
