Join our BSc Mathematics and Statistics with Data Science with Placement Year degree and develop the skills you'll need to become a quantitative scientist.

This four-year course includes modules in all three subject areas – mathematics, statistics, and data science – so you will be able to work confidently in the three disciplines and bridge the gaps between them.

Vast amounts of data are collected about almost every aspect of the world. Data science and machine learning are now part of our everyday lives; they are applied to process and interpret this data, perform in-depth analyses to extract valuable information, and build artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Expertise in data science, statistics and mathematics are thus becoming increasingly important in a wide range of areas including finance and business, climate science, medicine and the civil service.

This course, taught by the University of Reading’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been designed to develop your expertise in mathematics and statistics theory. You’ll also build your knowledge of applying statistics and data science methods to real-world problems and increasingly complex data.

Modules

The following modules have been approved in principle for delivery in 2025/26.

Please note that as part of our current curriculum improvement process, all modules require final University approval and may be subject to change.

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - ABC

including Mathematics at grade A. If you place us as your Firm choice we will accept you with one grade lower than this, including accepting a B in Maths at A level. (e.g. BBC with Maths at B or ABD with Maths at either A or B).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - Not accepted

Access to HE Diploma - D: 18 credits M: 27 credits

including at least 12 level 3 credits in Mathematics. If you place us as your Firm choice we will accept you with 15 level 3 credits at Distinction and 30 level 3 credits at Merit, including at least 12 level 3 credits in Maths.

Scottish Higher - ABBBB

including Mathematics at grade A. If you place us as your Firm choice we will accept you with one grade lower than this, including accepting a B in Maths (e.g. BBBBB with Maths at B).

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 30 points

including Mathematics at grade 6 at Higher Level. If you place us as your Firm choice we will accept you with 28 points overall, including accepting Maths at grade 5 at Higher Level.

Extended Project - B

In recognition of the excellent preparation that the Extended Project Qualification provides to students for University study, we now include achievement in the EPQ as part of a formal offer.  Eligible applicants would receive two offers,  our usual offer plus an alternative offer of a B in the EPQ and one grade lower in their A level subjects.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal - D3, M2, M3

including Mathematics at Grade D3. If you place us as your Firm choice we will accept you with one grade lower than this, including accepting a grade M2 in Maths. (e.g. M2, M2, M3 with Maths at M2).

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE Maths C (or 4), English Language or English Literature C (or 4).

Contextual offers for this programme are usually two grades beneath our standard entry requirement, e.g. BCC including Mathematics at grade B.

English language requirements
