Foundation Year

Our Foundation Year provides an excellent alternative route to Keele, providing a unique opportunity to better prepare for your chosen degree, and with guaranteed entry onto your undergraduate course once you successfully complete your Foundation Year. This extra year of study can improve your academic skills, expand your subject knowledge, give you a better understanding of higher education and, perhaps most importantly of all, build your confidence. On the Keele Foundation Year, you'll study on campus, joining our undergraduate community from the outset, with access to all the facilities and support that you'd get as an undergraduate student at Keele.

For International Students, Foundation Years are delivered through our dedicated on-campus provider, Keele University International College. Applications for International Foundation Years are also handled by KUIC; please do not apply via UCAS as the University will not be able to process your application and you may still be charged the UCAS application fee. Pharmacology

Specialising more or less exclusively in Pharmacology and drug discovery, our MSci offers an additional year on top of the Pharmacology BSc in which to undertake your own extended research project, alongside advanced modules.

During your first and second year, you will acquire a strong grounding in the core biological topics that underpin the study of pharmacology. This includes biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, physiology and anatomy and their application to the development and pharmacology of acquired and inherited disease.

To strengthen your understanding in these core areas and to provide context to your leaning, you will explore:

The mode of action of drugs used in the treatment of a wide range of conditions
The concept of selective toxicity
Approaches to modern drug discovery
Emerging technologies in drug development
The drug development pipeline
The wider societal impact of pharmacology

During years two and three of your studies, you will have the opportunity to choose from optional modules that are aligned to your career goals or interests.

In your third year of study you will put the knowledge and skills you have developed into practice by completing an experimental research project.

In your final year of study you will explore the principles and applications of cutting-edge research methodologies and techniques in the study of Pharmacology, Drug Development and the wider Biosciences to an advanced level. You will develop an advanced understanding of the processes involved in research dissemination and the acquisition of research funding in addition to critically evaluating current literature and complex methodologies. You will also undertake an extended research project and examine the context of your project in relation to on-going research activity in your field of study and the wider biosciences.
