Course summary
English and History at Southampton offers you the opportunity to think about literature and history in absorbing and productive ways. You could read fiction from Africa to help you understand European political history. You could gain new insights into the reign of James I by immersing yourself in the theatre of his time. A year abroad will enhance your studies and let you experience a new culture.
We are ranked 6th in the UK for English research quality in the Complete University Guide, 2024.
Partnerships with Chawton House, owned by Jane Austen’s family, and now home to a unique collection of women’s writing, and the John Hansard Gallery will give you unrivalled access to archives and artworks. You will also have access to one of the largest Jewish document centres in Europe, the Parkes Archive.
Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
Our year abroad partner universities in Europe include Barcelona, Prague, Frankfurt, Lausanne. You can also choose universities outside Europe, including locations in the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea.
Modules
You will study a variety of topics that cover the fundamental aspects of English and History, and you will have the opportunity to tailor your course to your interests by choosing some of your modules. Just some of the modules you may study include: World Histories Introduced; English on the Move; Ancient Greeks at War; Holocaust Literature; Kings, Poets and Terror: Literature of the 1790s.

Assessment method
On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own).
You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as blogs, creative projects, dissertations, essays, oral presentations, individual and group projects, module journals, portfolios, self-assessment, written exams, teamwork.
You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

Scottish Higher
We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

GCSE/National 4/National 5
Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)
We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
