Course summary
Offering you the satisfaction of a career caring for the health of the mother, baby and her family, our midwifery course aims to prepare you to become a confident and compassionate midwife.
By successfully completing this course you will have the opportunity to graduate with three qualifications: the NHS Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Programme (NIPE); a BSc (Hons) degree which is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); and the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative.
During the first two years, you will receive integrated theory and practice content. This will allow you to engage teaching and learning activities in both the academic and practice setting. The third year consists of alternate theory and practice blocks. You will study various modules, which will allow you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to care for women, and newborn infants across the care continuum from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, labour and birth, postpartum, and the early weeks of a newborn infants’ life. Each year, you will engage in a yearlong practice module. This module, alongside varied clinical placements, will provide you with preparation and support to develop your confidence and competence in practice, working towards autonomously leading and co-ordinating care at the end of your course. Clinical practice will be assessed using the nationally, NMC approved Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA).
We work with our practice partners to ensure you will have practice learning experiences in a wide range of settings - including community, hospital or home settings. You will be exposed to diverse populations and you will learn to work as part of the interdisciplinary and multiagency teams. Whilst on placement you will be supported, supervised and assessed by suitably prepared practice and academic staff to develop your knowledge and skills. There will also be opportunities for exposure to alternative (including global midwifery) experiences during the elective placement.
The Midwifery Department is committed to providing you with excellent, innovative, learning, teaching and assessment experiences. We use technology to enhance your learning, through lectures, seminars, skills, simulation and virtual learning. Engagement of practice partners and service users in all areas of learning, teaching and assessment is integral to our approach. Our evidence-based curriculum will empower you to contribute to the provision of high-quality holistic care both during your studies and in your future profession.

UCAS Tariff - 128 points

A level - ABB
128 UCAS tariff points from three A Levels. Grades ABB (or equivalent). Required subjects: Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology or Science subject at A Level or level 3 equivalent. Excluded subjects: General Studies and Critical Thinking. Extended Project will only be considered alongside A Levels if a relevant subject has been chosen.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
128 UCAS tariff points. Diploma accepted with one A Level or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Certificate accepted with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Diploma - accepted subjects: Health and Social Care; Science. National Diploma/Extended Certificate - accepted subjects: Either this qualification or the accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be in Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology or a relevant Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits. At least 45 credits at level 3 with 12 at Distinction and 24 at Merit. Accepted subjects: Health or Nursing and Midwifery. If applying with an Access course you only need GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade C/4 or above. You are not required to hold five GCSEs in total and GCSE Science is not required.
Scottish Higher
128 UCAS tariff points from three Advanced Highers (BCC) or two Advanced Highers (CC) plus two Highers (BB). Required subjects: Health, Psychology, Sociology or Science subject at Higher level or above.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points
Obtain a minimum of 32 points overall. Required subjects: One of Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Higher level. For students who do not already hold a GCSE in Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, grade 5 in Maths (Standard level) from the IB Diploma will be accepted. For students who do not already hold a GCSE in English Language at grade C/4 or above, English Language (Standard level) from the IB Diploma will be accepted. For English A, this must be grade 4 or above; for English B, this must be grade 5.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)
Minimum of 128 UCAS tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects. Required subjects: Health, Psychology, Sociology or Science related subject at Higher level.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
GCSE English Language or English Literature, GCSE Maths and GCSE Science at grade C/4 or above. Level 2 equivalents are not accepted.
T Level - D
Distinction overall. Accepted subjects: Healthcare Science; Science.
Welsh Baccalaureate: 128 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Required subjects: Either this qualification or an accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be in a relevant Health, Psychology, Sociology or Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 128 UCAS tariff points. Extended Diploma - accepted subjects: Health and Social Care or Science. NCFE CACHE Level 3 qualifications: 128 UCAS tariff points. Accepted subjects: Health and Social Care.
WJEC Level 3 qualifications: 128 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualification(s). Required subjects: Either this qualification or an accompanying A Level / level 3 equivalent must be in a relevant Health, Psychology, Sociology or Science subject (e.g. Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
- Places are subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health Check, Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and registration with the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
- Qualifications, personal statement, and references all form part of the selection criteria for this course.
- Applicants must demonstrate evidence of literacy, numeracy, and IT skills in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements.
- Applicants must normally have evidence of formal study within the last five years. However, we are sometimes able to waive this requirement if a candidate has a significant amount of professional experience in a relevant field, for example healthcare, social care, or education.
We do not accept deferred applications for this course. You must be ready to start the course when you apply via UCAS.
Please note, recognition of prior learning is NOT permitted for pre-registration midwifery entry. We will consider new students from other UK Midwifery courses only (i.e. no other course) at the end of year one only as transfers in. However, transfer students would have to demonstrate their prior learning and we would need to go through a robust process in mapping a transfer students' previous Midwifery study to the learning outcomes and proficiencies of our course.

- Applicants are required to undertake a face-to-face engagement, normally in the format of an interview. We operate a gathered field for applications, with interviews taking place the period of December to early March. Interviews are currently taking place via Microsoft Teams.
