Course summary
Economics and Sociology is a perfect partnership to add to your thorough grounding in the global economy and the many factors that influence wealth from a social and financial perspective, with a deeper exploration of what society means and how it shapes us as individuals in all sorts of ways. In Economics, you will explore the microeconomics of business and society, macroeconomics of the world economy and economic problems in political, social and historical contexts, with a strong emphasis on applied learning. You will thrive in the dynamic, international environment of our Business School of over 40 nationalities and be taught by experts including leading petroleum economist and government adviser Professor Alex Kemp and our health economists whose work influences Scottish and UK policy decisions on public health.
In Sociology, you will dig deeply into the ‘society’ influences on the economy, studying topics as wide-ranging as work-life balance, sociology of the family, religion and society. You will be taught by academic staff with international reputations for conducting high-quality research in social movements and global political sociology, religion and secularisation, conflict and peace. You will become skilled in the social research methods used to gather the evidence to better understand aspects of society – including observation, interviews, large-scale surveys, or analysing the content of documents and videos.
This subject combination will give you great skills in thinking critically and posing probing questions – skills which have tremendous value to employers across the public, private and third sectors, with career paths including business, management, marketing and advertising, journalism, local and national government, social and market research, teaching, health services, social work, charities and human resources.

Assessment method
Students are assessed by any combination of three assessment methods: Coursework such as essays and reports completed throughout the course; Practical assessments of the skills and competencies they learn on the course; Written examinations at the end of each course. The exact mix of these methods differs between subject areas, years of study and individual courses.
Honours projects are typically assessed on the basis of a written dissertation.

Qualification requirements
A level - BBB
For First Year Entry a minimum of 3 A Levels at BBB.
For Second Year Entry a minimum of an A in the subject selected for Single Honours plus BB, or AB in the subjects selected for Joint Honours plus a further B.
In addition GCSE Maths is required, as well as GCSE in English or English Language is also required.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM
Minimum entry requirement: DDM in related subjects.
Scottish Higher - AABB
Applicants who achieve AABB or better over S4 and S5 are likely to be made an offer of admission. This may be unconditional or it may be conditional, dependent upon academic profile. Good performance in additional Highers / Advanced Highers may be required.
Note: we do not double count a Higher and Advanced Higher in the same subject, but we do consider that a B at Adv Higher is equivalent to an A grade at Higher.
National 5 English at minimum grade C and National 5 Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points
For entry into First Year, a minimum of 32 points required, including at least 5,5,5 at HL.
For entry into Second Year, a minimum of 36 points, including at 6, 6, 6 at Higher level in subject(s) selected.
English and Maths at a minimum of Standard level required.
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H2, H2, H3, H3
A minimum of 5H with 3 at H2 AND 2 at H3 OR AAABB, obtained in a single sitting (B must be at B2 or above).
English AND Maths required at O.
