Philosophy and Theology

Study level:
Undergraduate

Course summary

Religion and philosophy are two of the most profound influences on individuals and society. By studying them together you'll get to understand:

  • the overlaps and differences

  • how they support and disagree with each other

  • their personal, historical, and cultural importance

You'll cover issues from the deeply personal to society-wide concerns, developing a greater understanding of different ways of living. This degree will transform how you think and feel about fundamental issues of human existence.

Theology

  • Study biblical writings together with key thinkers, ideas, events and movements that shaped the course of Western Christian thought

  • Examine the key texts, thinkers, ideas and events in the history of Islam and Judaism

Philosophy

  • Study topics, figures, and themes from across the Western, Indian, Chinese and Africana traditions

  • Explore crime and justice, race and gender, politics and religion, the environment and society

  • Apply philosophical thinking to everyday issues

Modules

Years one and two are a mix of core and optional modules. You'll study both subjects equally and get a solid foundation in the essentials of both disciplines. You'll also be able to choose areas to study that either deepen your existing knowledge or allow you to explore something new.

In year three you choose freely across both subjects. Continue to explore widely or specialise in a theme as your interests develop.
If you choose to write a dissertation you can do this in either subject or combine both into a single piece of work.

Contextual admissions

Universities and colleges consider more than grades when assessing applications and may make offers based on a range of criteria. Learn more about contextual offers.

We consider applicants solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential – we use exam grades to prioritise applicants but look at a range of factors and aim to give everyone an equal opportunity to show their achievements.

We understand that background and personal circumstances can have an impact on academic performance at school or college. Applicants who are eligible under our contextual admissions policies may be considered for a reduced contextual offer.
