Course summary
Want to become a Civil Engineer? Study our Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) degree course at Birmingham City University. This course is designed to meet the requirements of relevant professional bodies to give your career in civil engineering a head start.
Much of your learning activity will be hands-on, with access to our strong industry links. You’ll also be provided with the latest CAD software, meaning you’ll be well equipped to make an impact in an important industry.
You will study in a unique simulated workplace environment. This experience, and our outstanding industry links, will give you a competitive edge, enabling you to progress to a successful career when you graduate.
You’ll be provided with knowledge of the scientific, technical, environmental, economic, and managerial aspects of civil engineering, so that you will be able to apply yourself to both the design and management of civil engineering projects.
You will also develop the key transferable skills that modern employers require, such as problem solving, project planning, presentation and communication. Our strong links to industry enable you to apply your learning to problem-based scenarios, ensuring your intellectual and practical competencies are fully developed.
Civil Engineers design and construct anything from buildings and bridges, to dams, power stations, and motorways. This course will prepare you to work on these projects. You will focus on structures, materials, geotechnics, and hydraulics, and your studies will be enhanced with site visits, field trips, and guest lectures.
Professional Placement Year
This course offers an optional professional placement year. This allows you to spend a whole year with an employer, following successful completion of your second year, and is a great way to find out more about your chosen career. Some students even return to the same employers after completing their studies.
If you choose to pursue a placement year, you will need to find a suitable placement to complement your chosen area of study. You will be able to draw on the University’s extensive network of local, regional, and national employers, and the support of our Careers teams. If you are able to secure a placement, you can request to be transferred to the placement version of the course.
Please note that fees are payable during your placement year, equivalent to 20% of the total full-time course fee for that year.

UCAS Tariff - 112 points
Please note: If you qualify for our BCU Accelerate scheme, you could receive an offer that is two grades below our normal entry requirements.
A level - BBC
A Level: 112 UCAS tariff points / BBC (or equivalent). Must include A Level Mathematics at grade C or above. AS Level: Must be in a different subject to A Levels. A maximum of four subjects will be considered.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
112 UCAS tariff points. Diploma accepted with one A Level or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Extended Certificate accepted with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Accepted subjects: Engineering, or Construction and the Built Environment.
A minimum of: Distinction in Mathematics for Technicians unit; or Merit in Further Mathematics for Technicians or Calculus unit; or Distinction in Further Maths for Construction.
Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits. At least 45 credits at level 3 with 18 credits with Merit or Distinction. Accepted subjects: Engineering.
Scottish Higher
112 UCAS tariff points from three Advanced Highers (CCD) or two Advanced Highers (CD) plus two Highers (CC). Required subjects: Maths at Advanced level.

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. Required subjects: Grade 5 in Mathematics (Higher level).
Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)
Minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points, achieved in five Higher level subjects. Required subjects: Mathematics at Higher Level.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
This course does not require evidence of GCSE qualifications.
T Level - D
Distinction overall. Accepted subjects: Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction.
Welsh Baccalaureate: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications. Considered alongside A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, one of which must be Maths.
OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Accepted subjects: Engineering.
NCFE CACHE Level 3 qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered alongside A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, one of which must be Maths
WJEC Level 3 qualifications: 112 UCAS tariff points. Considered with two A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualification(s). Considered alongside A Levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, one of which must be Maths
