Winchester has been central to the English legal system for at least 1,000 years. Choose to study here and you will be following in a long, historic tradition. It was King Alfred who established English law-making and its ideology as a distinctive system which would have a major influence on the common law of later medieval England. Even today, The Domesday Book, a cornerstone legal document compiled in Winchester, is still valid as evidence of title to land.
Law continues to provide the framework for modern society, impacting on all our lives. As a law student at Winchester you build a thorough knowledge of previous case law to enable you to explore questions at the core of the world we live in. From the protection of life and liberty to international relationships, law provides the mechanism for change employed by governments around the world.

The LLB at Winchester is ideally suited for students aspiring to become solicitors or barristers. Students study the seven ‘Foundations of Legal Knowledge’ subjects which are required by the Bar Standards Board and also form an excellent knowledge base for those going on to study for the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations 1 & 2.

Entry requirements for advanced entry (i.e. into Year 2 and beyond)
Applicants who wish to apply for advanced standing (exemption from part of a programme) based on previous study are considered on an individual basis. Applicants are required to provide transcripts. confirming the module titles and grades they have already achieved, as well as module handbooks and/or programme specifications showing the learning outcomes of the modules completed.
International applicants
We accept a wide range of non-UK qualifications and use UK NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre) guidelines to confirm their equivalence.

We welcome applications from students who are completing an Access to Higher Education Diploma. We normally look for applicants to have studied a course that is in a similar subject and offers are usually made in line with our published tariff point range.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
GCSE in English Language at grade 4 or C, or higher.
T Level
MApplicants are required to hold a minimum of 2 x A-level or equivalent qualifications (e.g. 2 x BTEC National Subsidiary Diplomas) and we accept all A-level subjects, including Critical Thinking, General Studies and own-language A-levels. We welcome applicants who have completed the Extended Project (EP/EPQ) and points obtained from this qualification will be included in any offer. In addition, we accept a maximum of 32 points from level 3 qualifications below A2 that are included in the tariff (e.g. AS-levels not studied at A-level, music or dance qualifications).
If you are a mature student, your application will be considered on its individual merits and work or other professional experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of other published requirements.
