Combat au Crayon: How Caricature became Revolutionary Weapon in 19th-century France.

In 1834, English commentator Henry Bulwer-Lytton noted caricature to be a ‘more potent political force in France than the two legislative chambers combined’. This taster class will look closely at the ‘golden age’ of French caricature, showing how satirical drawings contributed to the fall of kings and republics over the turbulent 19th century in France. We will consider how artists like Honoré Daumier created their visual weapons, why they were so successful and the methods by which rulers such as King Louis Philippe I fought back.

International Politics

On the F Word: The Resurgence of ‘Fascism’ in Contemporary Politics?

Over the past decade, political theorists have engaged in lively debates on fascism in relation to a variety of events in global politics, including the election of leaders such as Bolsonaro, Modi and Trump, as well as the authoritarian drifts of nominally liberal governments.
To what extent can current political regimes and locales be characterised as fascist, or 'neofascist' or 'postfascist' as some theorists have suggested? Before engaging in such debates, we have to understand what fascism is, and how political theorists have understood it. This lecture will provide an introduction to critical theories of fascism and consider how they might help us navigate recent political upheavals.
