We’re updating our reports, meaning our interactive charts are currently unavailable. Apologies for any inconvenience.
This data explorer is a way to interactively explore the data published in the 'Sex, area background and ethnic group' reports and should be used in conjunction with these reports. The data explorer brings together all the statistics for every provider for which a report was published. It allows patterns of representation for different groups, both within and across providers, to be investigated, alongside patterns in offer making. Trends in these statistics for individual providers can be explored in the upper chart, while distributions across providers can be explored in the bottom chart. Providers are coloured by country and can be selected by hovering and clicking on the map or via the drop down menu above it, or by hovering and clicking on the lower chart. The map and the lower chart are zoomable and can be moved by clicking and dragging.
If you have any feedback on the data explorer, we'd be grateful if you could please take a minute to complete our short survey.
The data explorer is intended for use on desktop computers with mouse control. It's compatible with the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers.
Statistics in the data explorer are subject to the same rounding and non-disclosure controls as those in the published reports. See the Technical notes and definitions section of the reports for more detail. The implementation of non-disclosure controls means that sometimes the offer rate, average offer rate, and percentage point difference between offer rate and average offer rate are not plotted in the upper charts for some groups for some providers. If there are no data for a provider in a particular cycle year, the offer rate, average offer rate, percentage point difference between offer rate and average offer rate, and statistics which report proportions are not plotted for any year in the upper chart.
The background of applicants across the UK is measured used the POLAR3 classification. This groups small areas into five groups by their overall young entry rate. Across the UK around a fifth of young people live in each group. In Scotland young entry rates are relatively high meaning that there is a lower share of young people living in these areas. For applicants from Scotland applying to universities in Scotland an alternative small area measure, the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), is also used. This classification is constructed to have roughly 20 per cent of the young Scottish population in each quintile and so represents a more evenly split measure of background for Scotland.
The data explorer was created using the (D3 javascript library). UK boundary data was taken from (GeoJSON & TopoJSON collection of UK boundary data).
