Distance learning and part-time study

Higher education courses can be studied in flexible ways. There are different study types, work combinations, and part-time options.

Study in your own way

There are so many variables – it’s all about studying in a way that suits you. Explore the different options below, then search for the different kinds of study you're interested in. Some courses you can search for on ucas.com alongside the full-time courses, while others you’d discuss directly with the course providers you’re interested in.

The best thing about flexible study is that I have more time for individual modules and a little less stress and pressure. It has been cheaper financially and I get longer to make use of the great facilities and equipment and the sound advice from my tutors.

How and where to study

  • The different options range from online and distance learning to apprenticeships and work-based learning.
  • You can tailor courses to your interests and career goals, choosing modules to suit you.

When to study

  • Study at times to suit you – accelerated or extended courses, or part-time, day release and evening study.
  • This flexibility can be great for balancing your studies with your other responsibilities.

Entry requirements

  • Course providers often value both experience and qualifications.
  • This is great for mature students, and useful for anyone unsure how to get in to higher education.

Student finance

  • Financial support might be available, whether you're studying alongside work or on the job.
  • You might also be able to apply for extra support or government loans.

I would 100% recommend taking an undergraduate degree. For me, everything has changed for the better – I'm now in a career I want to do for the rest of my life. It can be a challenge to fit study in with a job and family commitments, but you make it work and there is plenty of help at the university if you need it.
