Adult nursing: why understanding nutrition is a M.U.S.T

Join Dr Neil Wilson from Manchester Metropolitan University as he takes a deep dive into adult nursing, and the importance of nutrition. In episode one, Dr Neil Wilson opens up the world of adult nursing and outlines some of the common misconceptions of the role. He then goes on to explain some of the key skills and proficiencies that you need to excel in the industry. In episode two, Neil explores one of the most common and serious health conditions in the UK: Malnutrition. First, he outlines some key information and then offers some insight into some theory behind patient care and the nursing process. In episode three, Neil introduces the MUST screening tool, a powerful tool used across all areas of healthcare to diagnose and treat malnutrition. Starting with some information about the tool, Neil then goes on to explain how the tool works and shows you an example of how it can be used to realise a patient’s needs. In the final episode, Neil discusses exactly why students are important to the future of healthcare, before setting you an exciting activity that gets you to think like an adult nurse and use the MUST screening tool for yourself!

Meet the academics

Dr Neil Wilson

Dr Neil Wilson is a senior lecturer in adult nursing at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he has been teaching pre-registration nursing courses to undergraduate students since 2008.  Neil is a registered nurse with a specialist background caring for people both in hospital and the community who had clinical nutrition needs. Neil’s research focussed on people who are living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the community and what nutritional care people with the disease received from their general practice.
